Coronavirus lockdown: Gautam Gambhir performs last rites of domestic help

The world is under the COVID-19 attack, and the scenario in India isn’t getting any better. With the nation under the lockdown, people are unable to perform their last rites on the victims as the lockdown prevents the body from reaching family.

Understanding the situation, India’s World Cup-winning hero Gautam Gambhir performed the last rites of his late domestic help after her mortal remains could not be sent to her home in Odisha due to the restrictions.

The cricketer turned politician, posted a tribute on his Twitter page for his employee Saraswati Patra, from Odisha who was working at his residence from past six years.

“Taking care of my little one can never be domestic help. She was family. Performing her last rites was my duty,” Gambhir who is Lok Sabha MP from BJP in Delhi tweeted.

“Always believed in dignity irrespective of caste, creed, religion or social status. Only way to create a better society. That’s my idea of India! Om Shanti” added the former opening batsman.

The 49-year-old Patra hailed from a village in Jajpur district of Odisha according to media reports.

A few days ago, the helper was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi and was suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure over a long period. On April 21, she succumbed to death while undergoing treatment.

Gambhir is putting everything in the war against coronavirus. He, along with his volunteers, have distributed baby food kits, N95 masks, PPE kits as well as provided 2000 bedding kits to shelter homes.

Meanwhile, Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Petroleum and Steel Dharmendra Pradhan who also hails from Odisha appreciated Gambhir’s help. Pradhan tweeted, “Taking care of Saraswati throughout the course of her illness, he also ensured her dignity in death by performing her last rites himself since her mortal remains could not be sent to her family back home in Odisha.”

Meanwhile, there are close to 2,400 cases of coronavirus in Delhi, and 48 have lost their lives.
