LUCKNOW: Massive protests erupted at Islamic seminary Nadwatul Ulama here on Monday after students were barred from stepping out of the campus to protest against the amended Citizenship Act, with students hurling stones at police guarding the gates.
A number of students of the seminary stormed out of the campus on Monday morning and started protesting but were pushed inside by police. They then started pelting stones at heavy police force deployed at the gates.
There was no report of any injury to anyone on either side.
Large pieces of bricks and stones lay strewn outside the gate as police struggled to keep the protesting students inside.
SSP, Lucknow, Kalanidhi Naithani said the stone pelting took place for a short while and the situation was soon brought to normal.
"Some students of Nadwatul Ulama here tried to protest and hurled stones from inside the campus. They were prevented and no one was allowed to come outside the campus," DGP OP Singh told PTI.
He said the situation is under control and one one was injured in the protest.
"Senior officers including District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police rushed to the spot," the DGP said.
The SSP said additional force will continue to remain deployed outside the campus to prevent any untoward incident.
The students of Nadwa had on Sunday night also tried to protest but were pacified by the police and college administration.
Some students of a private university in Gudamba area also held a protest on the Citizenship Act and to express solidarity with the agitating AMU and Jamia Milia students.
