Hardeep Singh Puri, Civil Aviation Minister of India stated on that the plane accident in Kerala appears to have been caused due to slippery runway as the Air India Express pilot tried to land on the tabletop runway among heavy rainfall.
He said, "Under the Vande Bharat Mission, the flight was coming from Dubai carrying 190 passengers. Pilot must have tried to bring the flight to the end of tabletop airport's runway where it skidded due to slippery conditions owing to monsoon.”
Meanwhile, the death tally in the flight crash at the Karipur airport, Kozhikode has now gone to 18. K Gopalakrishnan, Malappuram District Collector informed media that one more passenger had severe injuries. Only one, all those who had perished in the accident have been identified, he said.
According to reports, 16 passengers on the flight are said to be in a serious condition after the flight from Dubai with 190 passengers overshot the tabletop runway while landing amid heavy rainfall and fell into a valley 35 feet below and broke into two portions on Friday.
Investigating officials from Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), top officials of Air India and Air India Express have reached Kozhikode from New Delhi on Saturday, said Air India Express. They will be probing the cause of the accident at the Kozhikode airport where an Air India Express plane skidded and fell into a valley killing 18 passengers, including the two pilots and injuring many others on Friday evening. Another plane from Mumbai with officials who will coordinate and liaise with various agencies have also reached Kozhikode. They will also provide support and assist families of those affected in the accident.
