State govt removes bubble wrapping from plastic ban

Pune: Bowing to the pressure from the Maharashtra Plastic Manufacturers Association (MPMA), the Maharashtra government lifted the ban on bubble wrapping.

In a recent GR, the State mentioned that the ban on bubble wrapping has been lifted. It was one among many plastic materials which were banned as per March 23, 2018, GR of plastic ban. According to the association, many fragile items were getting destroyed due to the ban on bubble wrap packaging.

MPMA President Ravi Jashnani said, “Since many of the items, which come into the plastic industry or need packaging in the manufacturing stage, was not having bubble packaging due to which many items were getting destroyed, especially glass items. Therefore, after several meetings with the Environment Ministry, the Ministry agreed with us on May 20, 2019, and said that the ban on bubble wrap packaging, which was announced on March 23, 2018, will be lifted.”

The GR stated that bubble wrapping, which is industrial packaging, has been removed from the initial March 23 GR on plastic ban. However, the bubble wrap will be subject to Extended Producers Responsibility. While producing the bubble wrap, it should be printed with manufacturers’ and manufacturing details, type of plastic used, buy back price and the bubble wrap should be manufactured of minimum 20 per cent recyclable material of plastic.

Indian Plastic Institute Secretary Sameer Joshi said, “This is a positive a step since air bubble wrap film provides good protection to any item requiring less packaging material decreasing packing charges as well. Also, not much of bubble wrap is seen littered around. Some manufacturers abroad are making bubble wrap films which are 100 per cent eco-friendly and reusable again if not littered and damaged.”
