Shiv Sena will retain Mumbai Mayor’s post

MUMBAI: Senior Shiv Sena corporator Kishori Pednekar on Monday filed her nomination for the post of Mumbai’s Mayor. Mayoral election in Mumbai is scheduled to be held on November 22. Owing to the ongoing tussle between the Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over government formation in Maharashtra; the BJP decided to stay away of the race for the post of mayor and announced that they will not field a candidate for the mayoral post. Thus, making it clear that Pednekar will be elected unopposed as Mayor.

Suhas Wadkar was also nominated for the Deputy Mayor’s post of Mumbai by Shiv Sena. Interestingly, Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also decided not to field their candidate for the election.

In 2017, the Shiv Sena and BJP contested the election separately. In the election, Shiv Sena won 84 seats and BJP won 82 seats. Later, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) six corporators joined Shiv Sena. Two other party corporators lost their seats over eligibility criteria, where Shiv Sena candidates were declared corporators by the court. Hence, the Shiv Sena has 92 corporators in 227 members BMC house.

Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar’s tenure was expected to get over in September. However, with assembly elections scheduled to take place in October, the government gave an extension of three months. Accordingly, the Urban Development Department of Maharashtra conducted a draw of lots in Mumbai on November 13 and indicated that this year, the mayor will be from an open category.

Pednekar is known as the chief of fighter brigade of Shiv Sena. Earlier, Yashvant Jadhav was assured that he will be the next mayor. On Monday morning, Jadhav was told that he will be the nominee for the mayor’s post. Suddenly in the evening, Shiv Sena secretary Anil Parab held meeting in mayor’s cabin in BMC headquarters with Shiv Sena leaders in BMC and announced Pednekar’s name for the mayoral post.
