PUNE/ AHEMDNAGAR: After the arrest of two uncles and father of the girl who died of burn injuries, Ahmednagar district police officials said they are probing all possibilities of how the girl and her husband sustained injuries.
In her dying declaration at Sassoon Hospital, the victim, Rukmini (19) said she was set on fire by her uncles and they also set on fire her husband Mangesh Ransing (23). Mangesh is still undergoing treatment.
After their arrest, her father Rama Bharatiya, her uncle Surendra Kumar and maternal uncle Ghanshyam claimed it was Mangesh who set her on fire. Superintendent of Police (Ahmednagar) Ishu Sindhu said they are investigating all possibilities by recording statements of witnesses, accused and victims. “The exact sequence of events is being ascertained,” the SP added.
Earlier, the police said the woman and her husband were set ablaze allegedly by her father and relatives on May 1 in Nighoj village in Parner taluka of Ahmednagar district as they were opposed to the couple’s intercaste marriage.
Ransing, a construction worker and Rukmini got married in November last year against the wishes of her parents. On April 28, she came to Nighoj village to meet her parents. On May 1, Mangesh came to take her home. However, her father and uncles locked the couple in a room and set them ablaze. Neighbours who heard the couple’s screams managed to rescue them and alert the police.
