People throng to bid adieu to ex-minister Patangrao Kadam

Pune: The mortal remains of Senior Congress leader and former Cooperative Minister Patangrao Kadam were consigned to the flames at his birthplace Wangi in Sangli district with State honours on Saturday evening.  

Massive crowd had gathered at Wangi to pay homage to their beloved leader. His son Vishwajeet performed the last rites and lit the funeral pyre. 

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, Ashok Chavan and other party leaders were present. 

Earlier in the day, family, friends and political leaders were allowed to pay their respects to Kadam at his Pune residence, Bharati Vidyapeeth in Dhankawadi and Sonhira Sugar Factory at Wangi village. Kadam’s mortal remains were kept for paying last respects at his residence ‘Sinhagad’ on Law College Road.

Kadam passed away on Friday night at the age of 72. He was suffering from a kidney ailment since past few months. 

Mayor Mukta Tilak, former president Pratibha Patil, senior Socialist Party leader Bhai Vaidya, MP Anil Shirole, MP Shrirang Barne, Shiv Sena leader and minister Subhas Deshmukh, former MP Suresh Kalmadi, Congress MLA Praniti Shinde, Dr KH Sancheti, Dr Vishwanath Karad, social activist Budhajirao Mulik, Principal Director of Symbiosis Society Vidya Yerwadekar, Guardian Minister Girish Bapat, Congress leader Mohan Joshi and Abhay Chhajed, SPPU Vice Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar, MLA Jagdish Mulik and social activist Kumar Saptarshi paid homage to Kadam. 

Kadam’s mortal remains were taken to Bharati Vidyapeeth at 9.30 am in a special van covered with white flowers. A huge crowd had gathered in vidyapeeth premises. 

Students and employees of vidyapeeth gathered to pay homage to him.

At 2 pm, his body was taken to Sangli in a private chopper by Vishawajeet Kadam, brother Shivaji Kadam and son-in-law 
Rajendra Jagtap.
