NDRF asks disaster cell to ensure crowd control

Mumbai: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has written to the State Disaster Cell to manage the crowd during disasters in the State.

“It’s difficult to work during building collapse or natural calamity as locals block the roads and create a nuisance during the rescue,” the NDRF complained.

The State Disaster Control Cell has forwarded the complaint to all municipal corporations across the State and the State police to control crowds during any disaster.

During the Dongari building collapse in Mumbai, the NDRF could not save people trapped under debris as they could not locate the victims through sensors because the noise level of the crowd.

“In every disaster locals gather at the place of mishap and blocs the road and create chaos in surrounding areas. It hampers the rescue operation. Many of them are busy in shooting it on their mobiles. Often the locals are wiling to help the rescue team and they do, but they are not trained and unnecessarily it creates a chaotic situation,” said the official.

Kishor Raje Nimbalkar, Secretary, Relief and Rehabilitation Department admitted that the department received the letter from NDRF. “We forwarded the letter to all corporations,” he said.
