Nagpur: Drunken man steals PPE kit mistaking for raincoat, tests positive

Nagpur: Increasing transmission of COVID-19 and lack of facilities are causing inconvenience to the staff working in rural hospitals in Narkhed city in Nagpur. In addition, the number of alcoholics in the city are also increasing. An injured alcoholic came to a rural hospital for treatment and stole a PPE kit from the hospital assuming it as a raincoat. Furthermore, it became clear after the test that he also tested positive for COVID-19.

On Wednesday, the suspect who is a vegetable vendor consumed liquor and was heading back home when he lost his balance and fell into drainage. He was injured as he was under the influence of alcohol and fell unconsciously. After two days of treatment, he was shifted to Mayo Hospital in Nagpur. On his return, he was found with a PPE kit. He told his friend that it was a raincoat and that it cost Rs 1,000. Many noticed that it was a PPE kit, not a raincoat.

Employees from the city council's health department seized the PPE kit from him and set it on fire. He also told the city council staff that the PPE kit was stolen from the hospital during the treatment based on which on immediate bases his swab test was conducted and his report came positive.

The administration started searching for his relatives, family members and friends who came in contact suspecting that they might be transmitted of COVID-19 but none of them are positive.  Although a public curfew was observed in the city to prevent corona infection, the city had easy access to country-made and other spirited liquor during this period.
