LokSabha 2019: Congress registers first plaint alleging violation of poll code

MUMBAI: The first complaint of the season about violation of the Model Code of Conduct was filed with the Election Commission of India on Wednesday. The complaint was registered by the Congress party.

The party has submitted a written complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer against government advertisements still displayed on State Transport (ST) buses, bus stops and petrol pumps.

Sachin Sawant, spokesperson and General Secretary of Congress, said, “The Election Commission of India’s Model Code of Conduct has come into force from March 10 for the Lok Sabha elections to be held in April. Despite this, advertisements are displayed on ST buses, at bus stops and petrol pumps among other public places. These advertisements are yet to be removed.”

“Despite Election Commission’s (EC) directive to all states to remove all government advertisements from public places,  it has not been followed strictly,” alleged Sawant.

He also said that the EC should ask the government about it and also register a case of violation of the Model Code of  Conduct.

Meanwhile, the suburban district election officer (DEO) has removed 10,691 advertisement hoardings in suburban Mumbai in the last  three days.

An official of suburban DEO said that 8,465 hoardings, posters, banners and flags of the advertisements have been removed from the public places in Mumbai. While 2,226 banners have been removed from private places. Surveillance team, video surveillance team and video viewing team have also been set up to monitor the violation of the Model Code of Conduct in the district.
