PUNE: According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area lies over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal, Bangladesh coasts. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and become more marked till August 14.
Under its influence, IMD has issued a red alert for Vidarbha on August 13. Along with Vidarbha, east MP and Chhattisgarh may also receive widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy falls at isolated places on August 13 and August 14.
Vidarbha as on Monday has a rainfall deficiency of one per cent between June 1 and August 12. However, 8 out of 11 districts have normal rainfall. With good rains in the store for this region, this deficiency may be addressed. Light to moderate rainfall at most places is predicted along the west coast with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over Kerala on August 13 and over Konkan and Goa on August 13 and August 14. Rainfall activity over Kerala, Karnataka and Konkan and Goa is likely to decrease significantly from August 15 onwards, stated IMD.
Konkan and Goa have received 46 per cent excess rainfall between June 1 and August 12. Central Maharashtra, which is facing a drought-like situation, has 74 per cent excess rainfall for the season. With good rains in these regions, Maharashtra has 32 per cent excess rainfall so far.
