Heavy rainfall warning for Mumbai

PUNE: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning on August 3 and August 4 for Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, ghat areas in central Maharashtra, Pune, Satara, Nashik, Kolhapur, parts of Konkan and Goa, Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, Yavatmal, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Wardha and Washim.

On Friday, heavy rainfall was reported at Hingoli, Nanded and Latur districts in Marathwada. 

Speaking to Sakal Times about the reason for the increased rainfall activity, Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather, IMD Pune said, the monsoon is active over the State. So till August 6, many parts of the State will get good rainfall. 

“The western branch of the monsoon is getting stronger due to packed isobars at the Arabian Sea and strong westerlies winds, which are bringing a lot of moisture to the State. As a result, we are getting good rainfall. Moreover, the trough passing from Chhattisgarh to Odisha is also tilted southward, which is resulting in good rains in Vidarbha and north Maharashtra,” said Kashyapi.

Talking about the rainfall in the city, Kashyapi said, light to moderate rainfall is predicted in the city till August 5. From the evening of August 6, only light rains are forecast in Pune. 

Pune so far has recorded 581.1 mm rainfall, which is 252.7 mm in excess. For Pune district, IMD has recorded 1,017.5 mm rainfall till from June 1 to August 2, which is 101 per cent in excess. 

He added that some parts of the State are expected to get very good rainfall till August 4.

Till August 2, Marathwada has 25 per cent rainfall deficiency while Vidarbha has 9 per cent, which has significantly reduced. Whereas Konkan and Goa region has 29 per cent excess rainfall, while central Maharashtra has 37 per cent excess rainfall between June 1 and August 2. 

Maharashtra has reported 14 per cent excess rainfall between the same period. According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has been vigorous over Madhya Maharashtra and coastal Andhra Pradesh and active over Punjab, east Rajasthan, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Telangana and north interior Karnataka. It has been subdued over Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
