Ganeshotsav 2020: “Bring Bappa home but do Visarjan next year”; State government advises citizens

The guidelines titled ‘Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav 2020’ have been issued by Maharashtra state

Pune: “Bring Bappa home this year, but if possible do the visarjan (idol immersion) next year during the Bhadrapada month,” the state government has advised citizens. In its guidelines issued for the upcoming Ganeshotsav the state government has also appealed to citizens to use a marble or metal idol for worshipping during the 10-days festival or bring an eco-friendly clay (Shadu) idol and immerse it at home or a temporary immersion tank near your home.

The guidelines titled ‘Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav 2020’ have been issued by Home Department Principal Secretary Amitabh Gupta.


  • It is mandatory to obtain permission in advance from the Municipal Corporation or local administration. The pandals (mandap) to be erected by the mandals will be done as per the local body guidelines and in a simple manner without any special decoration which may attract crowds. 
  • Pandals should arrange for sanitizer and thermal screening facility.
  • Ensure social distancing norms are followed for visitors preferring to visit the pandal.
  • The Ganesh idol height should be maximum of 4 feet.
  • Accept vargani (contribution) from citizens if given willingly.
  • Ensure advertising will not attract the crowd.
  • Create public awareness of health issues.
  • Conduct blood donation camps or health camps instead of cultural events or programs.
  • Ensure unnecessary crowding does not happen while organizing aarti, bhajan, kirtan. Follow social distancing and noise pollution norms.
  • Arrange for darshan through the website, Facebook or local cable networks.


  • Avoid stepping out and crowding at public places to keep yourself safe from Covid-19
  • Ganesh idol height should be maximum of 2 feet.
  • Use marble, metal idol or clay (Shadu) idol.
  • Idol immersion should be done preferably at home or temporary immersion tanks in nearby areas.
  • Perform aarti at home instead of Visarjan (immersion) ghats to reduce time spent at public places.
  • Preferably do Visarjan next year in Bhadrapada month or at least postpone it till the Maghi Ganeshotsav.
  • Senior citizens should not step out for participating in procession or go to the visarjan ghats.
