Dip in temperature in State after Jan 3: IMD

PUNE: Though for some parts of the country New Year will start on a rainy mode, Maharashtra is expected to see a dip in temperature only after the end of this week.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), thunderstorms accompanied with hail and lightning are very likely at isolated places over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on January 1.

However, despite decreasing temperature, there is no dip in temperature in the State.

On Monday, the lowest minimum temperature reported in Maharashtra was 5.7 degrees Celsius at Chandrapur.

Speaking to Sakal Times, AK Srivasatava, Head of Climate Research Division from IMD, Pune said that many parts of India are expected to receive rainfall between December 31 and January 2.

“The IMD has predicted rainfall in parts of the country till January 3. There is expected to be a dip in temperature thereafter. At present, though, there is cooler weather in the northern parts of the country. These cooler winds are unable to penetrate towards Maharashtra due to lower levels of anticyclone winds over central India. This weather system is obstructing the colder winds,” said Srivasatava.

He added that after January 3, this system will not be there and hence colder winds from northern India will be able to penetrate the State resulting in further decrease in temperature.
