COVID-positive cases exceed over 700 in Maharashtra jail

The novel Coronavirus has spread across the globe at such a rapid pace that even the strong bars of prisons were unable to stay out of its reach. A total of 774 COVID-19 cases have been recorded from 14 different jails in Maharashtra till date.

These reports of positive cases comprises of 600 prisoners and 174 working staff. As of Saturday, four out of the 774 people have succumbed to the infection caused by the virus, stated an official. He further added, "Of the 596 inmates, 351 have recovered. Of the 174 jail staff who were infected, 93 have now recovered. Four inmates have died of the infection so far."

The highest number of positive cases has been recorded in Nagpur Central Jail with 219 cases, followed by Mumbai Central jail which has 181 cases. The Akola prison has recorded 72 positive cases while the Solapur prison recorded 62.

Surprisingly enough, the most crowded prison in the state located in Pune's Yerawada area has reported only one positive case for the Coronavirus till date.

Currently, Maharashtra has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in India with 99,499 active cases and 136, 985 cured cases. The state has reported    10,116 death and 246,600 total cases till date. 

The city of Pune in Maharashtra is going under the second phase of strict lockdown from Monday and will be under the lockdown for 10 days. Basis a review of the situation, the guidelines will be revised.
