COVID-19 Pune: MLAs complain against private hospitals during CM Uddhav Thackeray meeting

Pune: Several elected representatives, including Member of Legislative Assembly from Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and District areas, complained in the review meeting held by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray about exorbitant rates being charged by private hospitals while treating Covid-19 patients and also about the lack of coordination while implementing precautionary measures. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Member of Parliament Girish Bapat, MLA Chandrakant Patil and other representatives.

“A district level committee should be formed to coordinate and synchronise the work being done in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Rural areas of Pune District. A police task force should be formed to prevent attacks on doctors, nurses and medical staff who are treating Covid-19 patients”, said, Neelam Gorhe, Shiv Sena, MLC. Murlidhar Mohol, Mayor and BJP Corporator, Pune, said, “The funds available with Pune Municipal Corporation have depleted. State government should provide financial assistance to the PMC. Private hospitals have reserved beds for Covid-19 patients but they are not available in reality. Many citizens are complaining against exorbitant rates being charged by hospitals. Strict action should be taken against such hospitals.”

Bhimrao Tapkir, BJP MLA, Khadakwasla Assembly Constituency, also stated, “The civic administration has appointed officers for inspection at private hospitals. The phone number and details of these officers should be given to all elected representatives. There is inadequate staff at primary health centres. It is a very serious issue and should be addressed immediately.” “Patients have to pay Rs 55 thousand for an injection vial for treatment of Covid-19. Private hospitals are charging anything between Rs 7 to 8 lakh for Covid-19 patients. The slum areas inside the city are declared as containment zones for the past four to five months. Small traders and shop owners in these areas are facing financial crises. The situation in Pune city is such that there are 2000 patients and only 1600 hospital beds available. About 400 patients have to search for vacant hospital beds every day. Some big residential complexes have offered the clubhouse segments to be converted into Covid Care Centre,” said Sunil Tingre, NCP MLA, Wadgaon Sheri Assembly Constituency.

“There are a lot of complaints against Thyrocare lab which has been permitted to conduct swab tests for Covid-19. State government should look into the matter,” added Mahesh Landge, BJP MLA, Bhosari Assembly Constituency, Pimpri-Chinchwad.
