Chill in city as mercury drops 3.4 degrees C

Pune: The city reported a sudden drop in temperature of 3.4 degrees Celsius within 24 hours. Pune on Tuesday reported a minimum temperature of 9.5 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature on Monday was 12.9 degrees Celsius. A similar trend was seen across various cities in the State.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ahmednagar reported 9.2 degrees Celsius as the lowest minimum temperature in the State on Tuesday. Pune was the third coolest city after Ahmednagar and Nashik. Nashik reported a minimum temperature of 9.4 degrees Celsius.

The fluctuation in temperature indicated that Pune was cooler than popular hill station Mahabaleshwar, which reported a minimum temperature of 13.5 degrees Celsius.

The lowest minimum temperature across the country was 5.5 degrees Celsius recorded at Phalodi in west Rajasthan on Tuesday. Dense to very dense fog was also observed at isolated places over Chhattisgarh, moderate fog at isolated places over Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

Speaking to Sakal Times, AK Srivastava, Head of the Climate Monitoring and Analysis Group at IMD, Pune, said temperature in Maharashtra will drop in the coming days.  “However, a low-pressure area has developed in the southern Bay of Bengal, which may obstruct the further drop of temperature. That has to be observed further. However, this drop now is the normal expected temperature. The warmer days were not normal. The day temperature is also likely to reduce in a few days,” said Srivastava.

IMD said a well-marked low-pressure area layover central parts of south Bay of Bengal and adjoining the equatorial Indian Ocean on Tuesday morning. An associated cyclonic circulation is likely to concentrate into a depression during next 24 hours and intensify further into a deep depression. IMD predicted that it is very likely to move towards south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts during the next 72 hours.

IMD issued a heavy rainfall warning for south coastal Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu till December 16.
