‘Staff recruitment may start soon’

‘Staff recruitment may start soon’

Pune: The long-awaited recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff is likely to start soon, said Director of Higher Education Dhanraj Mane. “Teaching and non-teaching staff vacancies will be filled before the year-end, for which the State government’s notification will be issued in a couple of weeks,” said Mane.

“A high-power committee was constituted by the State on May 25, 2017. The committee is still proceeding with the approval of appointments. Once it decides, recruitments will begin,” added Mane. In all, 18,309 posts will be filled comprising teaching (9,511) and non-teaching (8,798) vacancies in colleges across State.

Of these, 4,649 posts of teaching (1,465) and non-teaching staff (1,719) are vacant in Pune region colleges, said Mane.

Recently, the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisation (MFUCTO) organised a State-wide strike, which lasted for 20 days. Over 25,000 permanent teachers had participated in the strike. The colleges which had examinations were exempted from the ban.

Due to a ban on recruitment, many colleges have been facing scarcity of teachers. Many students previously complained that lectures were not being held in colleges.

A city-based college had asked its students to not take a particular subject in the science stream, as they didn’t have a faculty to teach the subject.

Reacting to this, Mane said, “Meanwhile, the State government has permitted to recruit lecturers on a clock-hour basis (CHB) against the vacant positions in the colleges as an alternative. Therefore, there is no question of non-availability of teachers in the college. Also, it is the institution’s responsibility to provide the required teachers for students.”

“However, there could be possibilities that a college couldn’t avail teachers for some rare subjects, or had limited options for it.

Many teachers could be unhappy with the offered salary.

Therefore, it needs to be analysed the case-to-case basis of each college,” added Mane.
