Yoga Day 2020: Five poses for a healthy body and mind

June 21 marks as International Yoga Day but amid the novel coronavirus, people are locked down in their homes with little movement outside keeping social distance. This year due to the medical outbreak, mass gathering or mega yoga events around the country are cancelled.

The following five yoga poses are described by different people in Pune helps in balancing mind, body and soul. On International Yoga Day, let discipline reach your heart and perform yoga that makes your soul happy.

The 66-year-old Jageshwar Gupta who does yoga daily narrates the Dhanurasan. Lie flat on the stomach with the legs and feet together and the hands near the body. Bend the knees and bring the heels close to the buttocks and clasp the hands around the ankles. After this inhaling, lift the thighs, chest and head and make the arch of the back. Hold the position for a few seconds. Now exhaling slowly come to the original pose.

He said, “This asana massages the liver, abdominal organs and kidneys. The pancreas and adrenal glands are toned. The people who suffer from a weak heart, high blood pressure, hernia, colitis, peptic or duodenal ulcers should not practice this asana.”

Moreshwar Bhalerao, Government Certified Yoga Teacher Marm Chikitsak explains Sheersh Padmasana. Keep and use flat matt and use a pillow as required. Keep a lot of space on all sides where you do, use wall support if you are new to this until you achieve confidence. Keep eyes closed for half time and keep open for the next half. It must be done under the observation of an expert yoga teacher. Bhalerao has 20 years of experience and study and experiments over various combinations.

49-year-old Revati Jadhav who runs a consultancy shared Matsyasana on the International Yoga Day. While explaining the benefits, Revati says, Matsyasana is one of the most beneficial yoga and easy to perform. It helps to stretch the upper body which allows for unrestricted airflow, thereby providing additional oxygen into one’s lungs. The asana helps to instigate nutrient absorption. When practiced regularly, this asana can bring increased improvement to the skin conditions as well as enhance the throat and facial muscles.” This pose is perfect when you are looking to detoxify and de-stress easily, thus improving health and happiness.

Aditya Ranade an IT professional, follows a strict regime of yoga. Despite being busy for the whole day, Aditya never misses any chance to learn new yoga asanas. While performing, Lotus Padmasana he explains, “This Padmanasana helps you to stretch your ankles and knees, calms the brain, increases awareness and attentiveness and helps to develop good posture.”

Expressing his thoughts on yoga he says, “My opinion is that if you want to learn yoga, you need good institute and good teacher, luckily I got both things in my life, I started learning yoga from Vishwanand Kendra and later I also took admission in Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute, Pune which is considered as the best institute for yoga.”

Sadanand Joshi is 66 but he hardly misses any single day without yoga. He says, “International Yoga Day is a great way to start yoga and practice it daily. Some people perform yoga for just one day, clicks photographs and uploads on their social media platform. Yoga means an addition of strength, energy and beauty to your body and the process must go on.”

While explaining Uthita Shirsasana he says, “Utthita Sirsasana is also called a headstand split. Having a strong foundation is essential to performing and holding Utthita Sirsasana as the yogi must control the balance of rooting down for balance and stability, while the core lifts up so the legs can play with reaching up and then opening into the split.”

He adds, “The yoga helps to maintain the flexibility, immunity and vigour of the body. A person should take proper precautions in case of chronic spondylosis or hypertension.”
