Happy Nurses Day.
May 12 marks the International Nurses Day to celebrate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale known as Lady of the Lamp. She was responsible for significant changes in the wards where she worked, mainly the enhancement of cleanliness, which led to a significant decrease in the death rate of injured soldiers during the Crimean War (1853 to 1856).
International Nurses Day this year is special because it marks the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. This year, nurses all around the globe have been untiringly involved in the care of coronavirus patients. They are focused on arranging infection anticipation and control among patients. As a profession with a selfless nature that struggles for people’s well-being from the cradle to the grave, endangering one’s safety is inevitable at times.
While the leading response to the outbreak has been the fear of looming danger due to information as well as misinformation socialising all around, nurses are at the front line of communication, be it counselling the patients or even handling end-of-life care.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) highlighted that nurses are at the front of battling crisis and pandemics, asserting that the coronavirus is a token of the vital role nurses play.
In a tweet, WHO said, “On this #InternationalNursesDay, let’s show our gratitude by doing our part and following public health advice from WHO and national health authorities.”
During this unprecedented period marked with anguish and nervousness, what a few have already referred to as ‘World War’, we must thank nurses for being the heroes we look to.
Nurses have the vast privilege of carrying the load of conserving human dignity amid uncertainty. Once the coronavirus outbreak is over, please don’t forget that nurses are always there for you. Always have been and always will be.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his Twitter handle extended wishes and his gratitude on the International Nurses Day.
On the other side, the Mumbai Police also paid unique style tribute to the nurses on Tuesday. They shared a design of a nurse with “Thank you Sister” written on it. They wrote a dialogue from Sanjay Dutt starrer film Munna Bhai MBBS “Tum bahut mast kaam karta hai, Sister! Thank you”.
