COVID-19 update: India saw more recoveries than new cases

The global coronavirus infection count has now passed the six million mark. Worldwide, there have been 367,470 fatalities, while 2.68 million people managed to beat the infection.

There are over 173,000 confirmed cases in India now, with active cases at 86,422. There were 4,971 deaths so far in the country. Maharashtra, the worst-affected state, has over 60,000 cases.

In the last several days, Maharashtra had bundled hundreds of previously unreported recoveries from its districts, and reported them all together on Friday. The state usually reported daily recoveries of between 700 and 1400. It reported 8,381 recoveries over a single day on Friday. That was more than double the usual number of reported recoveries from across the country.

On Saturday, Pune district reported eight deaths caused by coronavirus disease (COVID-19), including an employee of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), with 151 new cases.

With this, the total number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 7,465 while the death toll has risen to 329, health officials at the district said. The number of new cases has declined from Friday's levels. Of the new cases reported in the district, 115 were from areas under the PMC, 17 were from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) boundaries, 10 were from rural areas of the district and nine were under the jurisdiction of the civil surgeon and cantonment board, said Dr Bhagwan Pawar, district health official.

In a first, daily new recoveries crossed new confirmed cases for the first time in India, and with a huge margin. On May 30, there were almost 8,000 new cases reported, while recoveries were over 11,000. This also resulted in a dip in active cases for the first time since the outbreak, which dropped from 89,748 cases to 85,841 cases.

Hence, India had more than 11,000 recoveries in a day on Friday, while the number of new cases detected was only around 8,000. As a result, the number of active cases witnessed a decline for the first time.
