Writing is in her DNA

Writing is in her DNA

Looking at the number of engineers turning authors, one always wonders at the connection between the two. IT professional Shweta Shah is the latest to join the list. The Pune-based author recently launched her debut novel, I Wear the Smile You Gave.

The plot revolves around the tragic love story of friendship, love and duty and is inspired by real-life instances. Published by Blue Rose Publishers, the book is now available online.

Shah, who is currently working on her second novel, talks about I Wear the Smile You Gave. Excerpts from the conversation:

During the launch you said that the book is inspired by real-life male character. Can you throw some light on it?
The person, who is the protagonist in my book, is a real-life inspirational personality.

The reason why I included him in the book, is because I wanted to give a message to the masses that despite life’s adversities, one has to stay strong and move on with a brave heart.

How did the transformation from IT to writing happen? Were you always inclined towards writing?
I always wanted to write. My dad is my inspiration. He is good at writing poems. One of my uncles is equally good at penning poems and is also a good orator. And, another uncle is a renowned personality, a good public speaker, a columnist and has studied journalism. Thereby, I believe that writing is inbuilt and is in my DNA.

What were some of the challenges you faced as a first time writer?
Writing is definitely challenging and tricky. For me the challenge was, ‘how to begin my first chapter?’ The storyline, characters and plot was ready but the challenge was how to begin with the first chapter as it had to suit the story.

Usually IT professionals have a hectic schedule. How did you manage to balance between your work and writing?
I happened to write as and when I got time — while travelling, and whenever I got some free time from my business and family. Generally, the ground work was done on mobile phone and was later clubbed. The first draft of my book was written in 20 days which was later followed by editing.

Which writers have inspired your style of writing over the years?
I am a voracious reader. Books have always been my best company. There are several writers, who have always inspired me, for instance say, Nicolas Spark, Jean Sasson, Priti Shenoy, Sudha Murthy and Durjoy Dutta. Each of them has a unique way of writing and are my all time favourites.

Any advice for those who are planning to turn to writing?
Never compare your work with others. Everyone is unique and everyone has their own style of writing. And above all, believe in yourself and don’t give up.
