We’ll dance together

We’ll dance together

If you love pop music with a happy vibe, you must catch French indie band Colt Silvers’ act at the upcoming Bacardi NH7 Weekender Festival this weekend. A headlining act, their performance is guaranteed to keep you jiving in the audience as the band members will do the same on stage. We caught up with vocalist Tristan Lepagney, bass player Nicolas Lietaert and guitarist Agnan Banholzer before their stint in the festival, and found out what a fun lot they are, just like their music.

EXPLORING INDIA
The trio have already been touring the country since last month as a part of the third edition of Bonjour India Festival curated and created by the French Institute in India, in association with Alliance Francaise with an aim to strengthen Indo-French ties and provide a platform for innovation and creativity.

Apart from spreading their infectious tunes, they have been exploring the country on their debut visit. “This is quite unbelievable for us. At first, we were really surprised that our music could bring us so far away from home. We’ve had a few days off in Puducherry after our first four gigs, and finally had time to chill, rent bikes, meet people — all that makes for a great experience. We’ve learnt to go easy on your spicy food also. We’re looking forward to discover more cities and more people here,” says Lepagney.

CONNECTING WITH INDIAN AUDIENCES
The Strasbourg-based band made it big with their debut release Night of the Living Robots in 2009, which was followed by Red Panda and EP — Gold Trees Gold and extensive tours across France. Their latest album, Swords, which has been co-produced and mixed by the Grammy-nominated Fab Dupont, is a compilation of foot-tapping numbers to get you in the groove. The band has been playing tracks from there at all their performances in India, and they are pleasantly surprised by the reaction of the audiences.

“The crowd has been great. They started dancing pretty soon and seemed to be well acquainted with what we do. I saw people singing the lyrics along with us. It’s a great feeling for us when it just connects right away like this, it seems natural and encourages us to play a better live show,” says Lietaert.

With such a positive feedback, the band is excitedly looking forward to performing at the festival in Pune this weekend. “We’ve heard so much about the festival. We are going to play a set that is mostly made of songs from our last record and made to make you dream and dance. We expect you to be awesome and crazy,” he adds.

But apart from the audience, the Colt Silvers has also made a connect with indigenous indie bands. “So far, we have been playing with some really raw rock bands, like the Delhi-based Superfuzz and the Chennai-based Broadway Addicts. It led us to believe that there is a rock scene here, and young Indian dudes love to play loud guitars too, compared to what you could not possibly believe coming to the land of sitar,” he says.

BACK IN FRANCE
Banholzer tells us that the music scene in France right now is all about hip-hop and electronic.

“For us it’s cool because these are genres we’ve always loved and taken inspiration from, and at the same time it’s a challenge to go on as an indie rock band without losing our identity among all these trends. We’re trying to stay as honest as possible while borrowing a lot from these trends, because that’s so much fun. This whole project has always been about having fun together anyway,” he says.

After wrapping up their India tour, the band will be headed back to France to work with an orchestra for their next project. “It’s a huge challenge and we’re very proud of this experience. We will also work on some new material after that,” he says.
