Vaibhav Gupta: ‘Games are meant for fun and entertainment’

Real money gaming is the latest attraction in the online gaming industry. Rein Games, a skill-based and real-money gaming start up, founded by Vaibhav Gupta, along with Himanshu Devra and Pranav Chaudhary in 2018, has caught people’s attention. The team has developed a gaming model that consolidates high-quality and innovative concepts, hack-proof entertainment and transparent gaming experience, and inculcates a real competitive spirit among millennial gamers.

Gupta tells us more:

How would you define the products developed by Rein Games?
Rein Games was founded to provide high quality, deep, hack-free gaming experience for skilled gamers who are looking to challenge their skills with real money on stake. The two biggest issues that we are looking to solve are that of innovation and quality. Innovation is severely lacking in real money gaming in India. Most of the game developers are looking to copy existing successful formats with minor variations whereas we strive to bring newer gaming concepts to real money. The second issue is the quality of games that are being produced. Most upcoming gaming companies are looking to release new games in a haste to capitalise on the recent wave of skill based real money gaming. However, this haste compromises the quality of the game and the experience. At Rein Games, we spend a lot of time in research and subsequent development of the game.

What differentiates Rein Games games from others?
All our games have been built 100 per cent in-house with disproportionate efforts towards ensuring the best and seamless gaming experience to our players. All our games are 100 per cent server validated thereby eliminating the possibility of the game being hacked (a very common issue that plagues other 8 ball pool games). Our game also acknowledges the flaky nature of India’s mobile phone connections and thus we have spent months trying to optimise the network on our game. Even if the player loses internet connection s/he will not lose the game. The game will continue as soon as the player reconnects. In fact, even if the player logs in on another device, the game will continue without any hiccups on the other device as well.

What is skill based real money online gaming?
As per the Supreme Court of India, online games where the outcome is predominantly determined by the skill of a player, may be played with real money at stake. A game where the likelihood of a player succeeding can be substantially improved with practice, training, or better access to information can be classified as a skill based game. Eight ball pool is a game of skill since by playing repeatedly against sharper opponent, you can improve the skill and significantly improve your chances of winning, especially against someone who is playing his/ her first game. We operate an eight ball pool game that is played with real money on stake.

How do you see the growth of the real-money gaming sector and what are its challenges?
The real money gaming sector is seeing an explosive growth. There are three major challenges that we are facing. The first being Google Play, which is reluctant about hosting real money games on their Play Store, even though iPhone’s App Store allows our games to be hosted. This means that, on Android, all our games have to be downloaded directly from our website, thereby creating unnecessary hurdles to be crossed. Some of the games being launched are half ready games released in an attempt to be the first in the market. The poor quality of these games creates doubts in the minds of users, even for high quality games. We have to constantly be on our toes to address the smallest of the customer issue to ensure that their faith is not lost. The gaming industry has largely embraced the ‘Play games and earn money’ message, while this is not necessarily true and should not be the reason to play the real money games in the first place. Games are meant for fun and entertainment, nothing else. If you are super skilled and end up making money by winning these games, it’s an added incentive. As an industry we need to realign our marketing messages to be accurate representation of the reality.
