Stack it up

Stack it up

Remember Phoebe Buffay from FRIENDS? Apart from her whimsical personality and her song ‘Smelly Cat’, you will probably still remember her for her whimsical jewellery, out of which her stacked rings have stayed with us for the longest. The ‘more is more’ approach has made its way into mainstream fashion, and celebrities and common people are sporting the look more than ever now.

Stackable jewellery trend is making waves, which uses multiple jewellery yet looks as one elegant piece. Giving us an insight into how one can ace the look in a simple, elegant manner Naushaba Ara, designer of Candere, an online jewellery store by Kalyan Jewellers, says that the trend probably began with people wanting to hold on to their jewellery that was dear to them and wear them regularly without having to remove them. “People started wearing engagement rings with wedding bands, chains with multiple pendants and watches and bangles with bracelets,”  she says.

Even though stackable jewellery looks stunning, there are a couple of rules that have been laid down so that the trend doesn’t look clumsy. To nail the trend, Ara says, “You shouldn’t be afraid to mix your metals, play with placements and even thickness of the jewellery pieces that you want to sport. The key here is ‘mindful experiment’.”

To begin with, people can simply opt for two layers of delicate chains — one close to the neckline so that it perfectly sits on the collarbone and the other one dangling a bit lower. “Once you get a hang of how it looks and how comfortable you are, you can add a few more pieces and layers as you like,” she says.

However, when it comes to stacking chains, it is important to take your clothing into consideration. “Stackable jewellery looks good only if you are wearing a plunging or a V neck because this way the layers can be seen prominently,” she says.

She also points out that one should stack together metals of the same colour. If you add a lot of variety in terms of the colour choice, then it looks like a lump around your neck.

When it comes to stacking jewellery on your hands, Ara says that Indians have been doing it for a long time, wearing multiple bangles in one hand. “But to achieve the more ‘boho’ look you can start with choosing different types of bracelets, infinity bangles, studded bangles and much more,” she says, adding that one must make sure that they fit perfectly well or else certain pieces will ride up and down your hand which will make it look clumsy and not trendy.

Wearing multiple rings at once is fine — we’ve all done this. But in the last couple of years or so, wearing multiple rings on one finger has been in vogue. Smaller sized or ‘midi’ rings are found in most stores now. Having extra bling on your fingers is fun to look at and great for making your fingers look extra long!

“Start out with a chunkier ring on one of your fingers, maybe your index, and then build the look from there, you could add another thicker ring if you like to another finger — but more than two big rings on one hand can start to look a little cluttered and messy, so add thinner bands,” she says. Mixing colours is in vogue. “Try some silvers or rose golds, and even coloured stones or different shaped rings,” she suggests.

She says simply follow your instincts, try and test it, and follow celebrities for inspiration on how to stack up jewellery. “With this trend, you can wear multiple  jewellery and yet create the look of a single piece, which is the beauty of it,” she concludes.
