The Sound of India

The Sound of India

Of late, K-pop and all things Korean, have been ruling the world, but for Tarana Marwah who goes by her stage name Komorebi, inspiration comes from the land of the rising sun.

The 25-year-old New Delhi-based artist recently won the Vh1 Sound Nation League 2019 where 8 sensational tracks by India’s finest artists battled it out for the title. Komorebi won it for her track Little One. She says that she feels very humbled and loved because a lot of people took out time to vote for her track on social media. “This latest feat of mine has presented me with amazing new opportunities because of which every little bit of appreciation counts. My win has made me one happy artist,” says Komorebi excitedly.

The artist explains that her stage name, Komorebi actually means sunlight that filters through tree leaves. She points out that she finds the Japanese people and culture extremely fascinating. “The Japanese articulate their thoughts in such a unique tone and I wanted that individuality and awe to reflect in my work,” she says.

Talking about her winning track, she says that Little One is one of her favourite songs from her debut album Soliloquy, which released in 2017. “The track is actually a lullaby that I wrote for my brother, so it is pretty close to my heart,” she says.

The artist points out that she even did a crowdfunded music video for the song, featuring a stop motion and a beautiful, nostalgic world created by Misha Ghose.

Komorebi’s overall style is a mix. The artist even writes songs that are presented as electronic music. Some of her tracks are acoustic electronic while the others are completely electronic. When asked what draws her to electronic music, Komorebi says that music was an accidental career choice but it has worked out for the best in many ways for her. “Throughout this journey, I have learnt a lot. I will and I want to continue to learn,” says the artist.

As for her musical influences, Komorebi says that Bjork, Grimes, Imogen Heap, Air, Zero7 are the ones she looks up to and learns from.

“Interestingly, I also follow and draw inspiration from anime and movie soundtracks and even chiptune music, something that is unusual but still amazing,” the artist says.

Talking about her future plans, Komorebi hints that she has various releases in the pipeline. “My goal as an artist of today is to make listening a more wholesome and interactive experience and for this purpose, I like to work with animators, coders and visual artists who are all in sync when it comes to my music. I’m excited to share my next body of work really soon,” she concludes.
