Some like it Classic Blue

Colours play a very important role in our life; they have a direct impact on how we feel. While a few colours make us happy, a few others make us confident and calm.

Pantone recently announced the Colour of the Year 2020 -- Classic Blue, a familiar and calming shade of azure. This colour for sure is going to rule the world of fashion.

So how does one incorporate this serene colour in their daily wardrobe? Experts share with us a few tips...

Shamika Pradhan, head of Fashion department, INIFD Deccan Pune, points out that the start of a new era will no doubt bring intense new challenges and so the colour classic blue, a deep blue shad, is comforting and relatable.

“The indigo hue brings to mind both the constant and the classic; the sky at dusk, an impeccably tailored suit, serene waters, or a bowl of perfectly ripe blueberries, something that makes everyone happy,” she says.

Samiksha Bajaj, cofounder, Samshék, says, “Blue has a certain amount of calm and dependability. In the world of corporate fashion if someone is wearing blue, it creates a sense of reliability, according to colour psychology. Fibres like rayon and silk bring out the vibrancy of the colour. This colour might be called classic, but women wearing this hue are guaranteed to make a statement.”

Ravi Gupta, designer, Gargee designer’s feels this is an ambitious and futuristic colour. “It brings back that feel-good factor in fashion. The vibrant and energetic vibe encourages people to push themselves and think out of the box. It is both an ode to all things traditional and a sign of better times to come,” he says.

In terms of the colour’s usability with your regular wardrobe, you can play it with white and it works as a minimalistic one. A hint of silver will work great for a night out. For those who love to experiment, a hint of vibrant orange will make a bold statement. Also, the most interesting part of this hue is that it looks good on every complexion. “In case you are planning to add the shade in your traditional wardrobe, try bandhgala or sherwani for a royal feel. The shade will look nice in the form of a drape as well. Make sure that you don’t over-accessorise the look,” he says.

Pradhan says that it is rather easy to style clothes incorporating the shade, since it gives a fresh spin to the entire ensemble. She suggests pairing classic blue trousers with a matching blazer for an office look, a classic blue denim with a smart black shirt for a more dress down evening, a cute sheath dress for a party paired with smart shoes, and many more ways.

“The combination is always stylish while remaining conservative and perfect for the office. The easiest way to coordinate blue and grey is to match the two in a suit and tie combination. “It’s commonly said that when a man first ventures into the world of tailored clothing or into the working world that demands such a dress code, he should begin with a navy blue suit or grey suit,” she adds. Even if your grey suit contains warmer brown tones, you’ll have no issues because blue also goes perfectly with brown,” Pradhan points out.

Designer Anuradha Ramam says, “This colour is cool and dynamic at the same time. Adding an accent in this classic blue uplifts one’s outfit, whereas wearing all your layers in the same classic blue will be overpowering. I would wear a classic blue jacket on a red maroon blue plaid shirt, or then wear a blue shirt and a blue jacket. For evening wear, one can go in for a classic blue long dress which will be not only be classy but also fashionable.’

Dos

  • Go crazy with monochrome and make use of the shade prominently, not only because it’s the colour of the season but, classic blue is also a versatile shade that impregnates elegance. According to colour psychology, blue is the colour of trust and confidence. It’s no wonder that this shade is a safe choice for many of us.
  • Go with you classic sneakers or go with nice moccasin, keep it simple and comfortable

Don’ts

  • Do not go with too contrasting shades while you are dressing.
  • Do not add too many neon with your classic blue.
  • Remember monochrome will be great, if you know where to stop.
  • If your mind has not yet quite figured out how to shop or style a classic blue ensemble for 2020, let the runways be your guide. The closer shades of the classic blues are royal blue, sky blue or baby blue and the turquoise blue which will help you to be there on the trend and get your look a perfect life.

When you are shoping for summer 2020, you can look not only for a perfect denim but also other fabrics  — linen suit, Oxford shirts — or a nice fitted Polo tee. My favourite for the season will be blue linen suit with white tee and sneakers.
Make your summer look great with a layer on different fabrics. Classic blue goes well with white and camel to create serene wintry vibes.
