So Dum Good

So Dum Good

Ask anyone to name their favourite biryani joint in the city and most would say SP’s Biryani House. The iconic restaurant at Sadashiv Peth is celebrating its silver jubilee. Popular for both Chicken and Mutton Biryani, SP’s, as it is popularly known, has introduced a special dish — Aamir Khan Mutton Dum Biyani.

Jawahar Chorge, owner, SP’s Biryani House, says that just like the actor, the biryani is also chatpata (spicy and tangy).“It is prepared in ghee and we add saffron and almonds,” he says. When we tasted the biryani, we loved the spicy flavour. In fact, it’s quite different from their most popular item Sajuk Ghee Mutton Dum Biryani.

Talking about introducing the Aamir Khan Mutton Dum Biryani, Chorge says that as a brand, they connect with the actor. “He completed 25 years in the film industry and so did we in the food industry. He is an offbeat actor because he does different kinds of roles and films. Just like him, we try to give different experiences and food to our customers. We do a lot of research to understand what people want. We have made different styles of biryani over the years,” he says. He adds that when they completed 25 years, they felt the desire to introduce this dish because they admire the actor.

The Dil Chahta Hai actor had even visited the restaurant and tasted the biryani. Chorge says that Aamir loved the taste. “He asked us, ‘What is difference between your regular and the one named after me?’. I explained that the Sajuk Ghee Biryani is loved by everyone from all age groups and is non-spicy whereas this new type of biryani is full of spices. Aamir loved the taste and enjoyed it. He told me how his mother also prepares awesome biryani,” he says. Chorge worked on the dish for a week to be satisfied with the result.

Completing 25 years in the competitive food industry isn’t an easy task, but Chorge believes that the brand name, which has become popular with locals because of their consistent quality, is responsible for their success.  “Because of online food delivery apps, the market has become competitive but competition is a good thing because it makes us focus on quality. I have learnt that whoever provides good quality food will survive in the industry,” Chorge says, adding that maintaining the quality of the food is a challenging task but they keep learning and evolving. “We have maintained a consistency in the taste of the food and in addition to that, we have good service,” he says.

Recalling the history of the brand, he shares, “When we launched, we were running the restaurant at an old wada (house). We used to serve only one type of biryani. But over the years, we have introduced different types of biryani, chicken and mutton gravy along with other dishes. Families who come here should have a good time.” Their four-storeyed restaurant on Tilak Road offers good parking space, comfortable seating areas, and fancy interiors. Talking about the future of the restaurant, Chorge says he believes in keeping it in the family. He says that his son is currently studying Hotel Management. “I hope once my son joins the business, he will bring newer ideas and take it forward,” he ends.
