If you’ve been to Barcelona, you cannot miss Antoni Gaudi’s magnificient works throughout the city. The Spanish architect, best known for the church of Sagrada Familia, was inspired by geometric shapes that occur in nature, and used a variety of materials like ceramics, stained glass for his stunning creations. Seven of his works were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

Inspired by his work, jewellery designer Varnika Arora has come up with a new collection titled ‘Gaudi’. Her designs are a manifestation of how she perceives the great architect’s work.

“We were inspired by Antonio Gaudi’s architecture, and how one architect beautifully shaped the heritage of a country,” says Arora, adding, “We have taken inspiration from a lot of architectural elements from stairways to columns, we have used gemstones which resemble the mosaic patterns used in the buildings he designed.”

Though festive jewellery has always been traditional, there is a distinct shift in the choices people are making to dress up for functions and get togethers nowadays. “We definitely feel there is a shift. Since people are more inclined to Indo-Western silhouettes, it’s only fair to see that trend coming up in jewellery as well,” she says.

In her designs, you can find geometric shapes moulded in gold filled with malachite, onyx and citrine, mosaic inserts in statement sizes, and more. “The colour palette for this collection is very vibrant, inspired from Gaudí’s love for mosaic technique and beautiful colourful architecture using various kinds of semi precious gemstones like rhodochrosite, green stephanie, pink opal, howlite, mookite, green and black onyx, mother of pearl, all kinds of colourful quartz, and more,” she describes.

The pair of Catalonia earrings is a tribute to the Catalan culture. “Our Catalonia earrings are cast in metal, plated in gold, and studded with a smattering of Green Onyx, Hydro pink Quartz and Citrine. Take this statement pair to graduation night or cocktail hour for a winning look,” she suggests.

The Wurlitzer earrings borrows elements from the classic Wurlitzer ballroom in Mandrid. “These handcrafted earrings in gold-plated metal are meant for long hours of dancing to Ray Charles’ tunes. Pair it with structured silhouettes or classic whites, either way you cannot go wrong,” says Arora.

The Guëll Hoops and the Al Nagar earrings are inspired by the swirly effect of the staircase that has been used by Gaudí in his constructions as well as mosaic paintings, making it simultaneously vibrant and different, simple yet statement-worthy, just like Gaudi’s works.
