Say hello to the new Pune: Empowering farmers

As more and more Indians are become aware of the benefits of eating fresh, seasonal produce, more efforts are being taken to supply the same. The concept of farmers’ market has taken off well in Pune. Almost every neighbourhood has its own farmers’ market where consumers can find everything, from local veggies and homemade spices, to fancy edible seeds and other groceries.

Prutha Date (21), a motion graphics artist and a smart, conscious buyer, says that she prefers farmers’ market over shops. Though she does not find much difference in the price, she finds better quality products at the farmers’ market. “Fruits and vegetables are fresh. The farmers have a variety of food products and homemade spices. It is actually very convenient to buy different products at one place,” she says.

Date says that the initiative helps both buyers and sellers. “It feels good to contribute towards the empowerment of farmers. They do not have to sell their products to dealers and get less profit. Also, they do not have to travel much to sell their items. And even we get to eat fresh and a variety of foods,” says she.

Apart from weekly vegetables, they buy their yearly groceries like rice and dals from the farmers. “Malls have to keep their food fresh for a longer duration, hence, they add preservatives. These additional substances are extremely harmful to our bodies,” she adds.

Earlier, fancy food items like flax seeds, broccoli and bell peppers were available in malls only. However, now farmers keep products catering to the taste of buyers.
