All set to make a glamorous debut on the ramp tomorrow, Sakal Times Couture Weekend will be a three-day fashion extravaganza at Amanora The Fern Hotels and Clubs, Hadapsar. We’re bringing the country’s top notch designers and fashion enthusiasts under one roof to experiment with latest trends, looks, and styles

Ace designer Babita Malkani, who is showcasing her latest collection at Sakal Times Couture Weekend, says that she gets inspired by simple things around her and her travels

Celebrated designer Babita Malkani’s work has always been about high fashion. Her latest collection — Generation of Gold — is no different. Malkani, who will launch the collection at the Sakal Times Couture Weekend on May 17, says, “I have just launched the collection on social media. It’s about cruise and resort wear. The season is all about destination weddings, so the collection has got an easy-breezy feel to it.”

The designer, who has dressed celebrities like Shraddha Kapoor, Kalki Koechlin, Anushka Sharma, Vidya Balan, Amy Jackson, Radhika Apte, Lisa Haydon, Amyra Dastur, Soha Ali Khan, Malaika Arora Khan, Diana Penty and others, says, “Many people are travelling because of destination weddings and they are cruising. My collection is not very casual. It is luxurious cruise wear for cocktail parties, dinner nights and other functions. There is a mix of colours and lots of gold to add to the drama. You will generally find a lot of glamour into the pieces that I do.”

Sharing tips for would-be-brides, Malkani says, “I see that brides usually go over-the-top when it comes to their wedding outfits. If it’s a destination wedding, they should go cool and casual. They don’t need to be over dressed.”

Malkani has showcased her collections at different fashion weeks, both internationally and in India including the Lakme Fashion Week. The designer says that she gets inspired by simple things around her as also her travels. “It could be anything. It could be some painting on the road or a print somewhere, any kind of colour. Beauty is everywhere,” she says, adding, “Also, since I travel everywhere, I even get inspired by a beautiful location.”

Malkani who has been in the fashion industry for two decades, retails out of Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Dubai, Indonesia, HongKong, Atlanta, South Africa, New York and Europe. She adds that her designs have evolved immensely over the years. “Fashion changes so fast, we have to keep up with the changing trends. Sometimes when I look back at some of my designs, I can’t stop laughing. I am like, ‘Oh God, how did I make it.’ But back then, it was perfect and trending. With social media becoming so strong, you have to keep up with your own sense of styling. You don’t have to follow anyone,” says the designer.

The fashion industry is buzzing with new designers but Malkani says that competition is good. “It’s always better to have people around who are doing work. It’s good for you because you get to learn and change. There is no denying that when I started off, there were not so many designers but that’s ok. Everybody has lot of work,” she concludes.
