Ready to be ‘mind-blasted’?

Ready to be ‘mind-blasted’?

After performing his new show Deported in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru earlier this year, the Indo-Canadian comedian returns to India on public demand. This time around, he will be taking his act to Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and yes — Pune — as a part of the Supermoon experience, which is Zee Live’s flagship IP for music and comic talents. We catch up with the funnyman to find out more:

Tell us about the Deported world tour — what topics are you going to cover?
There’s a lot more personal stuff in this set; I’m a middle-aged man with health issues, young children and relationship problems. I still talk about race and culture and other general silliness, but this set really reflects where I am in my life right now.

What is the one thing you dread about visiting India, and the one thing you look forward to?
I don’t dread anything about coming to India, seriously. I love it here. I jumped at the chance to come back so quickly and do these additional cities. Usually, I have to wait a few years between visits, but I can’t wait to get back. I love the energy of the cities, the food, the people, everything.

Have you watched any Indian stand-up comedians recently (on the internet or live)?
Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to watch any of the up and coming guys over here. For that matter, I haven’t had a chance to watch any of the guys back in the States. It’s just not something that I do. I love watching guys live when I do walk-ins at clubs around LA, but to actually sit down and watch someone on TV or my computer, I just don’t have the time.

How was your experience on The Indian Detective? Did it show you a side of India that you didn’t see before, and is there another season coming up?
I loved working on The Indian Detective. It was a lot of fun. We tried to show the diversity of India; Priya (the female lead) was a lawyer who worked pro bono in the slums of Mumbai, her parents were both doctors, my character’s father was an Anglo-Indian retired pilot, the police inspector was honest and diligent. Unfortunately, there won’t be a second season, I would do it in a heartbeat — but, we are currently in development of a spin-off feature film The Indian Spy which will feature some of the same characters as The Indian Detective and I’ll play Doug D’Mello again. We plan to start filming it in spring 2020.

What films, shows, etc will you be working on for the rest of the year? When will Deported be available online?
I have a few shows and movies in development and just wrapped filming a few weeks on Clifford the Big Red Dog, in New York. We filmed Deported in Mumbai in June for Amazon, so that will be coming out soon as well. Other than that, I’ll just keep on writing new material and getting on-stage. It’s what I do.
