Dr Rubina Shaikh explains the popular trends in cosmetology industry and what women are queuing up for...

Unhappy with your eyebrows? Lift them up! Want a prominent chin? Or fuller lips? Well, enhancement of facial features is quite the ‘in’ thing, taboos notwithstanding. So, people queue up before the cosmetologist, to get a pretty face and an hourglass figure. We talk to Dr Rubina Shaikh, senior aesthetic physician and cosmetologist, VLCC, to find out which procedures are popular and what precautions you must take. Excerpts:

Can you tell us what are the popular treatment procedures that women are opting for?
Popular treatments include laser hair reduction and medifacials. The former is very common amongst young and old, males and females. As far as medifacials are concerned, it combines organic treatment, facials and fruit peels, for glowing and blemish-free skin. Next are botox and fillers or thread lifts procedures which are non-surgical. These are helpful in erasing wrinkles, correcting facial features like lips, eye brows, nose, chin and jawline for beautification. Then, there are also anti-aging facials and appliance based treatments. In addition to these, surgeries to correct and enhance face and body are also sought for.

What changes would they like to make their personality/figure? What are the problem areas?
Many women want an hourglass figure. Hence they go in for liposuction. There are others who go in for plastic surgery for enhancement of their features or figure.

I do guide and counsel my patients because everyone wants to look good, whether you are a professional or a homemaker. The treatments are also affordable these days. These changes makes the ladies more confident.

Are there any medical conditions that can act as an obstacle in these procedures?
There are certain medical conditions which the doctor checks out during counselling session. Uncontrolled BP and diabetes, auto immune condition, muscular or nerves problem, patients on blood thinners — are some of the medical conditions that we take into account. But with proper counselling and guidelines, even these patients can opt for these treatments.

What are the pre and post procedure measures that the patients have to consider?
For every treatment there is a different pre and post protocol, which the patients are advised to follow.

Is there any restriction on the upper age limit when it comes to undergoing the treatment?
There is no upper age limit for the patients to undergo these procedures. Their medical history, is of course, considered. The treatment is advisable for those who are 18 years of age and above.

What advice will you give to those women who are trying for breast augmentation?
I would advise the women to consult a reputed and knowledgeable surgeon, to use certified products and to stick to post-operation care.

Will there be any changes in the remuneration because of GST?
The prices may increase, but people do manage to save up money for themselves. So it shouldn’t be a problem.
