Mira Kapoor: ‘Mothers should indulge in some self-love without feeling guilty’

Mira Kapoor is no longer known as just Shahid Kapoor’s wife. She is a celebrity in her own right, what with the paparazzi following her and the increasing number of her social media followers.

Mira has in the past been trolled for her statements but she nevertheless makes her points quite firm and clear. Recently, Mira along with Neha Dhupia, flagged-off a 1km symbolic walk for more than 375 expectant mothers at an initiative -- Bio-Oil Pregathon. The idea was to inspire mothers-to-be to take #Big LittleSteps towards self-care and self-love on their journey towards motherhood.

Mother of two, Mira believes that the pregathon was a wonderful event that has encouraged so many expecting mothers to take part in the walk. “It’s lovely to see over 375 women here who are present with their partners to celebrate their pregnancy, and themselves, in all shapes and sizes. It’s so heart-warming to see that mothers of today have so much support from their family and the brand that reminds them that pregnancy should be celebrated, and loving yourself is another way of loving your baby,” she said.

We spoke to Mira post the event. Excerpts:

How important is it for women to take care of themselves during pregnancy?
I really do believe that a happy mother makes for a happy baby. So as mothers, we should indulge in some self-love without feeling guilty! And an indulgence in fitness is a win-win. Choose what you enjoy doing and what you are medically permitted to do, whether it’s walking, swimming or yoga. Take that time out for yourself to recharge and connect with yourself, both during and after the pregnancy.

What were some of the important tips you followed while expecting both your kids. Especially the second time around?
I think you should listen to your heart. I did whatever made me happy. Whether it was eating to my heart’s content, a good workout, spending time with family or just enjoying some one-on-one time with my older one before there would be another little tot to share her attention for life!

Taking care of oneself post pregnancy is the most challenging part, with lack of sleep, post-partum stress etc. What has been most challenging for you?
For me, it was definitely balancing the amount of time I gave both my kids. A new sibling brings about a lot of change in a child. So as parents, we spent a lot of time with my daughter to help her understand this new change and feel secure and loved. And now to facilitate that bond, to help them grow together as siblings, without interfering in their own individual relationship that they form every single day is a challenge that is worthwhile. There is no better feeling than to watch them laugh and play together. Till one hears a cry!

How would you sum up your journey so far as a mother?
I am still on this journey. I had my kids very young, so I like to think that I am growing as a mother each and every day along with them. It’s tough no doubt, it has its own set of challenges but it is just so rewarding. The kind of love one experiences as a parent, both towards and from one’s child, is indescribable. It’s nothing short of a miracle.
