Making a difference!

Kavita Seth has mesmerised us for years with her soulful voice. But not many know about the social initiatives the talented singer gets associated with. For the past few years, the singer has been organising two musical initiatives — Nirvana and Ananth Utsav.

This year, she is organising Nirvana with Alert India which is an association for Leprosy Education, Rehabilitation and Treatment, in Mumbai today (December 14).

The singer initiated Nirvana in 2012, after she lost her husband in 2011. “I decided to do an event as a tribute to him. Every year, I organise two concerts — Ananth Utsav on his birth anniversary and Nirvana on his death anniversary. Everybody is in celebratory mood, I try to apply whatever I have learnt from him and whatever he has taught me through my music. I am organising these two events because of my passion and with the blessing of the almighty,” she says.

Nirvana will be held at Sophia Bhabha Hall, Breach Candy, Mumbai from 7 pm onwards. This is the second time Kavita is getting associated with Alert India. “I try to get some cause attached to my concerts, which adds value to the purpose. This is a good cause because these people have been tirelessly working towards creating awareness about leprosy for past 20-25 years,” she says, adding, “Though there is enough awareness about leprosy and the number of people suffering from this disease is also less, there is a lot that can be done. With such a huge population, we need to keep creating awareness.”

Kavita feels happy if she is able to raise funds for any cause. “It feels like I have contributed a small fraction to society. I recently performed for Pen Foundation in Delhi. This foundation works for retired and bed-ridden poets and writers, whom no one is helping. It was a fund-raising concert. I keep getting associated with some cause or the other because I get lot of satisfaction as an artist and I am also fulfilling my duty as a human being,” says the singer who is known for songs like Iktara, Tumhi Ho Bandhu, Jeete Hain Chal, Prem Mai Tohre.

Kavita, who specialises in Sufiyana-style singing, calls herself a messenger who spreads the message through her music or the cause she gets associated with. “Sometimes, the role changes, at times I sing for a cause or sometimes for myself. I just try to impart good quality music because we need good poetry and music so that people listen to it and get engrossed. I will continue doing so,” she adds.
