International kickboxing player Nilesh Shelar: ‘Eat good, work hard’

Kickboxing, which is more popular as a martial art, helps you take care of your body and mind, increases strength and boosts your confidence. While giving us an insight into kickboxing, Nilesh Shelar (33), an international kickboxing player, tells us about more its benefits.

“My father was a wrestler and my brother, a judo player. I grew up watching them and opted for kickboxing,” he says adding, “People have a completely wrong notion about kickboxing. People think of it as a self defence technique, but it is also a great fitness activity. It helps increase endurance, strength, power and is highly effective for weight loss. You start with a warm-up and move on to different types of kicks like slap kick, push kick, back kick and round kick, and punches like uppercut, cross punch, round punch etc.”

Training time
To get a good result, one should practice it for at least one hour. Just like any other exercise, kickboxing helps you burn a good amount of calories which is essential to lose weight. “To warm up your body, you should start with skipping which helps you to strengthen your legs, boosts your stamina, increases flexibility and endurance which is very important to practise kickboxing. Start off with cardio exercises and then move on to the other training,” says Shelar.

Have a goal
To stay fit, one must have a goal.  “You should have a goal for yourself  and according to your requirement, the trainers will train you. Those who want to pursue it as a career, should dedicate at least two hours to training.”

Hand wrap, boxing gloves, head guard, mouth guard, shin pad for legs, groin guards for both men and women and chest guards are a few of the tools required for kickboxing.

Keeps you mentally agile
Kickboxing uses all the muscles from your upper and lower body. It includes a lot of footwork, therefore, toning it more. Your upper body also gets toned as it moves, rotates and bends in order to perform well. “It not only makes you physically strong but also mentally sharp. Whenever your opponent kicks, you should have the capability to react quickly. Kickboxing teaches you that. Footwork, pushups, and squats are compulsory exercises to keep you agile and fit,” says Shelar.

Maintain weight, lose fat
Kickboxing helps you maintain weight and lose fat. “Depending on the body and intensity of exercise, one can burn 400-500 calories. If someone is weak, s/he can burn at least 200-300 calories. High-intensity kickboxing, however, is not recommended for people with medical conditions. Shelar suggests being open about your medical issues with your trainer. If someone wants to opt for fitness with certain medical conditions, the trainer designs special training for them. Also, always practise under the guidance of a trainer,” he says.

Don’t opt for a 7-day workout
There are so many people who workout for all seven days but it is not advisable. “When you exercise, your muscles tear. So you must give at least one day to rest. The other factor that people must consider is their clothing. Never wear a tight outfit as it interferes with the blood flow. Also, avoid wearing too loose clothes because it may interfere while you exercise or your oversized clothes may get stuck in the fitness equipment which could prove dangerous. Therefore, always choose the right fit for you,” he says.

Speaking about the diet, Shelar says that you can make your regular food with less oil, spices and avoid feasting on junk. It affects your stamina. Eat good, work hard,” concludes Shelar.
