How about Pohe burger or nuggets?

Pohe has been the ultimate breakfast choice for most Maharashtrians. Keeping this in mind, six Pune friends came together to launch a food outlet — Aamhi Pohekar — in Narayan Peth last year. A team of four workers helps them in the venture.

“We believe that no one should stay hungry. Therefore, we offer varieties of pohe with the starting price of Rs 15 which goes up to Rs 40,” says Tushar Pawar (28), an IT professional-turned-restaurateur. He adds, “We took the roadside food and gave it a platform where the customers can get the best out of it.”

Launched in April 2019, this food joint has over the months enjoyed a good number of patrons. Pawar says, “Maintaining hygiene and health is our utmost priority.”

Across India, one can find a variety of pohe — Indori pohe from Indore, Tarri pohe from Nagpur, Dadpe pohe from Konkan, and the most common, Kande pohe and Matar chiwda from the North. “We thought of bringing all these varieties under one roof. People loved it so much that since the very first month, we are selling an average of 800 plates per day, approximately 25,000 plates per month,” Pawar says.
Aamhi Pohekar currently has six outlets in different locations like Narayan Peth and Kothrud in Pune besides New Sangvi, Baramati, Panvel and Sangli.

Speaking about the name — Aamhi Pohekar, Pawar says that they wanted the name to be impactful, easy to memorise and convey what they believe in. “If someone thinks of pohe, we want Aamhi Pohekar to be the first name that comes to their mind,” Pawar says.

Options galore
The eatery offers more than 15 varieties of pohe — Gharche Pohe, Indori Pohe, Konkani Pohe, Dadpe Pohe, Pohe Dahi Tadka, Pohe Masura, Bhel Pohe, Pohe Aloo Tikki, Pohe Nuggets, Pohe Balls, Pohe Cheese, Pohe Nutri Plate, Pohe Laddoo, Chai Pohe, Pohe Upma, Pohe Misal, and Pohe Burger.

Giving an example of their experiments, Pawar says, “We use ghee, jaggery and pohe to make Pohe Laddoo. We give a combination of pohe and vegetable salad in our Pohe Nutri Plate,” says Pawar.

Another fancy yet healthy food option at the outlet is the Pohe Burger. “Maintaining the look and the taste of a burger, we offer Pohe Burger. We use mayonnaise, sauce and bun. The only difference is in the patty which is made of pohe,” says Pawar informing that Pohe Dahi Tadka and Pohe Masura are the must-try items. Those who are not much into pohe, can try out their Bhel pohe. “The nutrition value is the same,” Pawar points out.

Speaking about the beverages, he says that they offer Tak (buttermilk) and Masala Tak. However, those who love to sip on tea while they enjoy their pohe, can get it from the nearby tea stalls. “We have people from different age groups and professions coming to us everyday. On Saturday and Sunday, there is a huge footfall, including families. A family from Lonavala came to taste our pohe after they heard about us,” says Pawar with pride.

People love to try out new things and to maintain this excitement , Amhi Pohekar is launching four new varieties soon.
