Hail the Prince

Hail the Prince

When the Duke of Cambridge says something, many listen. And recently, he said something that surely deserved a ‘Hear, hear’. Prince William visited a charity for LGBT youth community at the Albert Kennedy Trust (AKT)’s new community centre in London. AKT supports LGBT young people who are at risk of homelessness. According to the Queer community, at the newly launched service center, it was the first time they had a member from the royal family visiting them.

Prince William said that he would not care if any of his kids were gay, rather he would fully support any decisions they make for themselves. But he added that he would certainly be worried about the pressures from society that they would face, particularly for the position his family is in. “It does worry me from a parent point of view. How many barriers you know, hateful words, persecution, all that and discrimination that might come, that’s the bit that really troubles me,” the Prince said.

William and his wife Kate Middleton have three kids — Louis (1), Charlotte (4) and George (5). William also stated that only after becoming a father has he started thinking about the issue and he wishes the world to be more accepting. It is a collective responsibility to try, help and put the discrimination and persecution to the past. “But that’s for all of us to try and help correct and make sure we can put that to the past and not come back to that sort of stuff,” he added.

According to the survey of Stonewall UK, charity organisation for the Queer community that campaigns for their equality, many have faced hate crime because of their gender identity and with the royal family member supporting their cause, things should change for the better.
