Getting dressy

Having welcomed Lord Ganesh to our homes, a plethora of family gatherings, delicious food, non-stop laughter, bonhomie and cheer await us. When you talk of all this, can you not talk about festive clothing? Of course not. Whether you are a handloom queen or love all things glamorous, this is the season to celebrate and showcase the best of your style.

FESTIVE DENIMS
Charumathy Murali, senior executive designer, Spykar Lifestyle, says that denim is one of the most versatile fabrics around. “Not only is it extra comfortable but it is also easy to style up or down depending on the occasion,” she says pointing out that one can style a lightweight denim shirt dress with a pair of statement chunky earrings and ethnic sandals, or pair a white camisole top with high waist denim skirt and accessorise the outfit with ethnic jewellery and matching bangles. She also says that one can throw on a statement scarf or dupatta for an elegant touch.

However, if you want to keep your festive look laidback and cool, go no further than your favourite pair of jeans. “Coordinate your slim fit distressed jeans with a high slit chikankari kurta, or style the look with statement silver earrings and matching stilettos,” says Murali. She also points out that one can easily give their festive look a high street twist by pairing boyfriend jeans with a crop tee, along with some offbeat jewellery like fringed head chain or layered chain belt for a boho chic look.

One can accessorise to give their denim look an Indo-badass feel. “It can be as simple as a beautiful zari scarf or mirror work jewellery that you picked up from your travels or you can also go for sequinned or embroidery denims,” she adds.

Talking about the colours that are a hit this season, she says that indigo is a great way to look sophisticated while keeping things casual. “Mix and match lustrous Indigo silk with raw, rugged denim and complete the look with antique silver jewellery and matching heels,” she says. Rich colours such as deep wine, creamy white and dusty golds work well for soirees but for a trendy fashion statement, choose a single bold colour like retro pink or rust orange.

ETHNIC CHIC
Nelson Jaffery, head of design, LIVA Birla Cellulose, says that India is a land of festivals and getting the right festive look is a big part of the celebrations. “With Ganeshotsav now, and Navratri and Diwali around the corner; everyone is gearing up to match the spirit of the festivities. However, it’s time to go beyond the regular ethnic lehengas and salwar-suits and experiment with quintessential Indian garments,” says Jaffery.

He points out that the saree is the quintessential Indian garment that epitomises grace. Even though it has always been a popular choice, in recent times, it has regained its somewhat lost prominence in the fashion scene. “By taking centre stage in the FDCI Delhi Fashion Week and the #SareeGate saga on Twitter, the saree has set a wave of trend in the fashion world,” says Jaffery.

For a seamless blend of rich tradition and chic modernity, one can go for Indo -fusion outfits like a long kurta with palazzo. To create beautiful fashion styles, put on a lightweight ethnic shrug or a jacket.

Jaffery points out that minimalism is key to achieving the simple yet chic look. “Simple, delicate jewellery pieces can add a spark to your minimalist look. When it comes to traditional get-up, balance it with minimal attire and gorgeous makeup, and totally own the festive look,” he adds.

For any outfit, fabric plays a crucial part. “A garment’s royal blends redefine indulgence by lending the fabric a luxurious softness and impeccable lustre so if the fabric is boxy or too thick, the look and fall of the garment will be dulled down so it’s better to opt for soft and fluid fabrics like viscose and modal which are eco-friendly too,” he concludes.
