Get your Christmas cake

We bring to you the signature bakes of traditional bakeries in town. Help yourself!.

With Christmas around the corner, Pune is gearing up to celebrate the festive season. The celebrations will be incomplete without cakes. To help you indulge, the traditional bakeries in town have prepared the finest treats. We bring to you some of them.

“Our Christmas is incomplete without cakes from Kayani Bakery. They have always been the centre-piece of our feasts,” says Raja Ranbhise, a working professional from Kolhapur who has been visiting the bakery since two-and-a-half decades. He specifically points out that the taste has not changed ever since he started buying these cakes.

Freelance content writer Sakshi Arora has lived in all possible towns across India and has eaten a lot of cakes. “But my all-time favourite has always been the Fruit Cake at Kayani,” she says. For her favourite cake, she does not mind getting up early and going to the bakery “because the freshly-baked cake instantly cheers me up.” She believes that since it is available all round the year, she has her own little celebration every time she purchases one.

“We don’t have any special Christmas-oriented products because the public has always loved our regular items,” says Rustom Kayani, co-owner. He adds that because of the high demand they always run out of stock of their Plain and Plum Cakes, and all-time favourite Shrewsbury Cookies. Kayani Bakery has a lot of customers belonging to other communities coming in to buy the delicious treats in the festive season.

“What is Christmas without a Rich Plum Cake?” asks city-based Ravi Jacob adding, “Eating Rich Plum Cake is an important tradition of our family Christmas feast.” He believes that the Plum Cake from Naaz Bakery in Camp is full of the Christmas essence.

Wine Cake at Naaz is the tastiest feels Abhinav Jana. “The cake is packed with the richness of flavour and cannot be missed,” says Jana adding that he eagerly waits for Christmas to arrive so that he can take home the delicacies of this bakery.

“The Rich Plum Cake and Wine Cake have been a complete hit for a very long time now,” says Mohammed Jafari, owner, Naaz Bakery. He says that people come in early to buy the freshly-baked cakes which get sold out in a matter of hours.

Swati Pandey, homemaker who moved to Pune a few years back, says, “Ever since I moved to the city, I have been buying Ribbon Cake from Marz-O-Rin.” She makes it a point to purchase this cake from her favourite place in Camp every December and has also spread a good word about it among her friends and family.

To make sure that everyone can take part in the celebrations, a few of the bakeries also sell eggless varieties of cakes. Working professional Kalyani Shah says, “Being a vegetarian during Christmas is not gloomy anymore, thanks to the eggless options at my favourite outlet in Camp, Marz-O-Rin.” She says that her best friend introduced her to the Plum Cake  there and she just loves the richness of the cake.

“Pune is increasingly getting cosmpolitan,” says Vijay Sheriyarji, owner, Marz-O-Rin. She recalls that around 45 years back Christmas was not a big affair in the city but nowadays the entire city gathers at Camp during Christmas. “We have a lot of the cosmopolitan crowd coming in for the festive treats and bakes,” she adds.

With this bakery tour, you know where to do your Christmas cake shopping this winter.
