Gems on screen

Gems on screen

The reason most of us remember a movie after walking out of the theatre is because it connected with us in some way or the other. A good film is one which manages to evoke some kind of emotion within us like happiness, sadness, anger, nostalgia. Every year, there are some films among the thousands, which stay back with us.

2019 was no different. When films were constantly competing at the box office, there were few cinematic gems which caught our attention. Though many of these films might not have been box-office successes but they are worth a watch.

Here’s looking at a few fascinating films that redefined the quintessential Hindi film and challenged society’s norms:

Hamid
Despite a National Award win, Hamid was amongst the most underrated films of the year. Coming close in the heels of opening dialogue on Kashmir, the film sides with humanity as it explores the tender relationship between a young boy who is looking for his father and connects with a man over the phone. It also touches up on the story of a half widow played by Rasika Dugal, the indiscriminate disappearance of many people and the strained relationship between the jawans and the common folk.
The Aijaz Khan directorial connects also because it’s child actor and star of the film—Talha Arshad Reshi, who bring innocence to the story.

Good Newwz
Amidst being a Bollywood entertainer with top actors like Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh, Kiara Advani and others, Good  Newwz is film with noble concept. What stands out is the fact that we haven’t seen a concept like this (sperms getting mixed up) in Hindi films. Though the audience keeps laughing all through the two-and-half-hour story, but at the core it raises many important issues and beliefs – the societal pressure to have a baby and how ‘apna khoon toh apna hota hai’ is so deep rooted in Indian society, and why go through all the pain, when a couple can adopt. It’s a touching, beautiful story with few certain flaws though, which can be ignored.

Section 375
So what really constitutes as rape is a question this nation needs to address on priority. But on screen, the Akshaye Khanna and Richa Chadha starrer explores the subject with the balance and gumption that it deserved. Exploring emotional manipulation behind rape and how such cases are fought out in court, the film treads carefully between two solid narratives finding its own ground on what needs to changed in rape laws of India.

Gully Boy
Gully Boy is about the story of the underdog, following his dreams, having faith and standing up for himself. Inspired by the lives of street rappers— Divine and Naezy, Zoya Akhtar beautifully capture their story in the slums of Mumbai. The powerful lyrics in form of raps about life in general by Javed Akhtar, Divine, Naezy, Kaam Bhaari, Ankur Tewari and others adds to the story. How can we forget the actors - Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Verma.

Sonchiriya
An unpredictable period thriller, Sonchiriya is a fantastically performed and beautifully directed film. Taking you on a gripping and intense journey of introspection and questioning all beliefs of sin, power, remorse, and redemption, its a riveting dacoit tale that shocks you while taking you through the heartlands of India. With brilliant actors like Sushant Singh Rajput, Manoj Bajpayee, Bhumi Pednekar and Ranvir Shorey playing pivotal roles, the film subtly brings to light that life and death is a cycle and no one can escape it. The storyline, the cinematography, the background score, and the acting combine to create a film filled with liberating sadness that compels you to invest in it.

Article 15
A socio-political drama based on the Article 15 of the constitution that prevents discrimination on the basis of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth, this film takes you on a gut-wrenching ride through the eyes of an unassuming police officer (Ayushmann Khuranna) posted in Lalgaon. His journey to fight the deeply ingrained mindset while unravelling the mystery of the rape of two young girls and one missing girl while trying to accept the stark shocking reality of our country, is heart-touching. A film with a strong backbone that dives into the reality of the situation, without fear and hesitance, Article 15 keeps you hooked till the last shot.

Chhichhore
Life is beyond the marks we score in college or the tags that people give us. It’s about achieving goals, standing by friends, standing for love and those endless memories that we make in college. Nitesh Tiwari’s Chhichhore is a feel-good story about a loser group who reunite after many years. It will take on a nostalgic trip and will make you call your old friend who whom you are lost touch because of your busy career or family life. This film leaves a smile on your face.
