Gear up for PlayStation 5

Sony has officially confirmed that PlayStation 5 will be the name of its next-gen console and successor to the PlayStation 4 which will release just in time for next Christmas. The upcoming PlayStation will come seven years after the debut of the PlayStation 4 and is expected to bring with it substantial upgrades under the hood as well as a brand new controller.

The ‘PlayStation 5’ name was confirmed by Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan. Not only did he reveal that PlayStation 5 will launch in time for December 2020 but he also revealed some details about the new controller coming with the next-gen gaming console. Notably, the new PS5 controller will come with a brand new haptic technology to replace the ‘rumble’ technology found in previous controllers.

Ryan said that the PS5 controller will offer a broader range of haptic feedback that will vary depending on what’s happening during gameplay which means that crashing into a wall in a race car would feel much different than making a tackle on the football field.

Another new feature coming to the controller is what the company calls adaptive triggers that have been incorporated into the L2/R2 trigger buttons. Game developers will be able to programme the resistance of these trigger buttons, so that users feel a different tactile sensation when ‘drawing a bow’ or the varying levels of resistance between a machine gun and a shotgun.

It is further revealed that the controller will come with an improved speaker and a USB type-C connector for charging. Moreover, game installation on the PS5 will be different than in the PS4. Instead of having to install the entire game at once, it could be possible to install a part of the game such as the multiplayer campaign while the single-player campaign can be installed at a later time.

While fans still do not know what the PlayStation 5 will look like, Ryan wants everyone to look forward to upcoming PS4 titles like Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. Shortly after the announcement the fans were having a field day on Twitter, where they excitedly tweeted, shared and discussed the news. While a few users also mentioned that since the PlayStation 5 will be released during the holiday season, they are already sure what they want from Santa. A few others mentioned  that they would save because the launch price still has not been disclosed.
