Fun and games

Gamers, grab your consoles and get ready for a grand digital gaming festival — the first Asian edition of DreamHack. After hosting the festival in cities around the world including Atlanta, Valencia, Marseilles and Stockholm, DreamHack comes to Mumbai with a three-day extravaganza where gamers can get together and participate in various tournaments, and other events such as the famous 24-hour-a-day Local Area Network (LAN) party. We speak to the founder and CEO of Nodwin Gaming, Akshat Rathee, to find out more. “Asia has been an area untapped by DreamHack for a long time now. We are glad they chose India over many other gaming superpowers like Korea and China. The crowd of our nation is so versatile that the brand will get to know of all the things that may or may not work out with a population of this size,” shares Rathee.

The games
“DreamHack has a plethora of games to compete and win. This event will see national and international pro teams playing Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2. Fighting games such as Street Fighter 5, Tekken 7 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. At the KO Fight Nights, event attendees can play a number of mobile games such as PUBG mobile, Mobile Legends, Sachin Saga and World Cricket Championship 2. Then comes the bigger list of world-class games being featured at the BYOC (Bring Your Own Computers) section, where you’ll get to see all the games you grew up with like Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Age of Empires, Warcraft 3, StarCraft 2, League of Legends and some newer ones like Overwatch, Artifact and Fortnite,” informs Rathee, adding that the retro zone will have old-school games. The 72-hour gaming marathon will also feature top electronic music acts including Shaan, Sartek and Zenith amongst others.

The rules
To maintain order and ensure that everyone has a nice time, contestants must follow a set of rules. “Players under 14 years of age should have parental assistance at all times. Players at the BYOC section are instructed to bring their own LAN cables and spy guards. Alcohol, drugs, and tobacco consumption will not be entertained inside the event and violators will be lawfully handled,” he says.
This apart, every gamer should produce a valid ID proof along with other documents mentioned in the website. More instructions that every participant needs to follow can be found on ww.dreamhack.com/mumbai

The gadgets
While everyone’s going gaga over the new Nintendo Switch, the DreamHack gaming festival will have many more gadgets that will blow your mind. Rathee talks about Hyper X. “This will be one of the standout brands at the expo section. Specialising in gaming hardware, they will showcase some of their high-end gaming products providing hands-on experience to the visitors through mini matches, flash sales and live streaming sessions,” he says.

The future

While PUBG has gathered quite a fan base this year, experts in the gaming industry believe that it will continue to be a rage in 2019 as well. “From the e-sports point of view, PUBG and PUBG Mobile have tremendously picked up this year at the competitive scene. And it’s assured to grow bigger and better in 2019. Fortnite is also one such game. Basically, the battle royale genre, in general, is picking up the pace,” says Rathee.
