A friend in need

Darshan Raval has come a long way since his days as a contestant on the reality talent show India’s Raw Star. Last year he made his debut in Bollywood by singing the title track for Sonam Kapoor’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga, and was the host of the show Dil Beats. He continues this role in the upcoming third season of the show. “My association with the show started last year, where I played the host. I was doing something like this for the first time ever and didn’t think I would get such good response from everyone. I’m back on public demand for the third season,” says the Hawa Banke hitmaker.

Talking about how he loves being on the show, he says, “I will be narrating stories that people have given to the show. Last time, I sang a lot of songs; this time, I will be singing more. There is a segment called Dil Beats segment where I perform like I do in a concert for my fans. It’s like a concert on television.”

But there’s something he loves doing more than singing on the show. “The most exciting part is that I get to meet my fans live on TV,” says Darshan. As the Love Dost on the show, the singer will be listening to the problems of the contestants and offering them advice on the same.

The 25-year-old crooner shares that he is quite the love guru within his circle of friends too. “I am the one who my friends come to for advice, be it on their love life or otherwise. They come and talk to me about what’s happening in their lives and sometimes ask me for advice on what they can do about it, and I always try and help them figure things out,” he says.

But while he is solving everyone else’s problems, who does he bank on for guidance? “My mom was the only person I would run to with all my problems. Sadly, she is no more. But I remember all the things she would say to me. I keep it locked in my memory and think of what she would say to me whenever I need advice from her about anything I’m going through,” Darshan says, adding, “One of the most important things she said to me was that if I’m happy, I should think of people who have achieved more than me and aspire to get to that level, and if I am sad, I should think of people who have it worse than me and be grateful for what I have. This way, I will always be grounded, but not complacent. That’s how we must live our lives. Another important thing she taught me was to weigh the benefits and disadvantages, the pros and cons, before making any important decision in life. This way you will know exactly what you’re getting into and be prepared for it.”

While our concept of love is inspired by twisted concepts that movies, books and other forms of fiction we come across during our formative years, Darshan has his concepts all figured out. “For me, love is not very complex. I don’t believe in the fantasy of love. I believe it is a natural emotion which one doesn’t even realise most of the time. It’s a very simple and basic emotion which we experience everyday from our families, our friends and our significant others as well,” he says.

His latest track Asal Mein, a love song that released on February 18, got over a million views in a matter of two hours. Sharing about his music, he says, “I have sung a song for Love Aaj Kal 2 for which I am getting great feedback. There are many songs that I will be singing in Dil Beats, doing reprised versions of some songs as well. Otherwise, I am singing a lot for upcoming movies and there are many independent projects I am working on as well.”
