Floral fantasy

Led Zeppelin told you about a girl with love in her eyes and flowers in her hair, we’re going to tell you about becoming the girl with flowers on her eyes and, well, you can always find out how to put love in your hair. The latest trend that has taken Instagram by storm is flower eye makeup. With people drawing tiny colourful flowers on the sides of the eyes, or on the lid, the trend is pretty and tricky. Premila Boni talks us through it.

“I had seen some artist from abroad coming up with this trend on Pintrest. It looked gorgeous, fresh and cute. Needless to say, it looked quite unique. So I decided to try and do them on myself,” says Boni.

When it’s a task for most women to handle eyeliner and get a perfectly straight line on the eye lid, so much so that some require tools to make an extended wing, Boni says this trend does not require precision as much as a good judgement on colour combinations. On the first look, you’d think that making such tiny flowers on the eye lid is tough, but Boni assures you that it’s not.

She urges people to try this look instead of going with regular eye-liner and eye-shadow, when they head to a party. It is certainly going to make heads turn. “I think this trend should catch on in India, but then Indians shy away from something that is so unique and stands out. It’s a fresh take on makeup, and you can let your creativity run wild,” she says, adding, “We Indians were not big fans of bold lip colours either, but now the trend has picked up and it’s become a regular thing for us to wear bright red and pop colours, no matter what time of the day or what occasion it is. So I feel, why don’t we give this beautiful foral eye makeup a try?,” she wonders.

The works
What all do you need, to try it out? Boni lists, “All you need is liquid matte lipsticks in different colours, a good smudge-proof eyeliner, a mascara and a toothpick or the dotting tool from your nail art kit and you’re sorted. You can alternatively use liquid eyeliners in different colours instead of lipsticks. Also a setting spray can be used once the look is complete.”

She warns to be careful with the dotting tool or toothpick while making the dots for the flowers and insists you exert caution while using a setting spray on your eyelids.

When your eyes are done up in this way, how should the rest of your makeup follow suit? Boni suggests that when you want to attract attention to your eyes, you should go easy on the lips. “You can wear a nude lip tone instead of a bold or dark colour. Let your eyes do the talking. Finish the look of your eyes with a coat of mascara. All you need to keep in mind is that since there’s a lot going on in the eye area, everything else should be minimal,” she says.
Once you have the confidence to try out this trend, you can’t wait to go places with it to show it off. This look is great for the upcoming season of music festivals and concerts. “Or you can even wear it for a fun brunch with a sun dress and strappy sandals. It’s a good look to carry if you’re heading to the beach, or chilling by the pool. But you must make sure that you use water-proof make up for it,” she says.

But does it stay pretty for a few hours, or does it smudge into a melange of colours? Boni answers from experience, “I usually use liquid matte lipsticks and a smudge-proof eye liner and mascara. It stays perfect till I use a make up remover to take it off,” she says.

Flower Power
Boni tells you how to make pretty flowers on your eyes:
1.Prep your eyes with a light eyeshadow.
2.Draw on your regular winged liner.
3.Either accentuate the tip of the liner with a flower or two and add some freshness with a few leaves that you can make with green dashes, or draw chunky flowers with colour combinations of your choice along the entire strech of your liner, which you can use as a base.
4.To add more glamour to the look, spread kohl along the lower lashline and blend in some eyeshadow from the same family of colours as the flowers.
5.Finish the look with a neat coat of mascara.
6.Lock the look with a setting spray for it to last longer.
