Mercedes-Benz organised a customer engagement initiative called Luxe Drive over the weekend where fashion designer Rocky Star showcased his label and conducted a styling workshop for their clientèle. We caught up with the designer during the event for a quick chat about what’s been keeping him busy lately.

Maya, for the confident woman
Having recently showcased his Spring/ Summer collection for 2018 at London Fashion Week, Rocky can’t stop gushing about his muse: Maya. “It’s about a woman who is completely confident about herself. It’s about a woman called Maya. She’s not afraid to go out there, get what she wants and show the world that she’s got what it takes,” says Rocky, describing his colour palette as bright and psychedelic. “Each garment is handcrafted with sequins, and beads. It’s for the summer, so I’ve kept everything shiny. And everything has a two-tone shine, like that of a fire fly,” he says, adding that the pieces from the collection are perfect to wear to clubs, dinners, and functions because it is night wear.

Apart from sequins, there is a lot of texturing involved in his outfits, and he has worked on his own print patterns too. “The whole idea is to look mysterious and powerful at the same time. I have used fabrics like silks, pure cottons, georgettes, and chiffons in colours like moss green, turquoise and of course, my signature colour — black,” says Rocky. He claims that the garments have embroidery to add to the underlying shiny psychedelic element, but it’s not overpowering.

Separates and layers for the party season
Giving us a few quick tips on how to look your trendiest this party season, Rocky says, “The whole trend now is about separates. But what suits your personality is important. Today, people are picking up a lot of clothes from various designers and brands and putting it together. Anti-fit is really big right now, because of the comeback of the ’60s and ’70s look of broad palazzos, bell bottoms and the likes.”

He claims that geometric prints and stripes are very big on the fashion scene now too. “See, because it’s the party season, you do require some shine. But the idea should be to layer it to get different looks. So it’s not just a mix-and-match concept that you must apply,” says Rocky, adding that when it comes to layering, one has to be intelligent about their body type. “If you’re slightly heavier on the hips, you should try to do softer layers around longer layers and again add a softer layer to finish the look. The idea here is to make the look very fluid. But if you are slightly slimmer, wear a structured jacket with longer layers inside.

Layering doesn’t mean that you add three-four layers and look bulky; it’s about what suits you best,” says the designer, adding, “The weather is chilly in Pune, so you can go slightly heavy with the top layer.”

As far as picking separates to construct an ensemble is concerned, Rocky says, “I don’t think you can go mad with things that are completely different. There has to be some sync between what you’re putting together, there has to be some coordination in the outfit you wear. I’m not saying match everything together, but maybe one accessory,” says Rocky.

He suggests, “If you’re wearing turquoise earrings, you can add a turquoise scarf, and the rest of the outfit can be neutral. The most important thing to consider here is your personality — what kind of a person you are. If you’re a vibrant person, you can opt for slightly colourful and kitsch pieces to put togeth
