Destinations to ‘fall’ for

Few things are as picturesque as the hues of autumn — it is a truly magical time, heralding the onset of winter. There is a slight nip in the air and sweaters and mufflers are whipped out to celebrate the change of season.

Here are some destinations you absolutely must head to, so that you can witness the changing colours of fall in their full splendour.

BANFF, CANADA
The Canadian Rockies throw up their own set of brilliant colours in the autumn. The Banff National Park in Alberta, high up in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, is one such example. There are many trekking trails in the park where you can view the autumn colours up close and personal. Or you can cycle, take a train, drive, or even canoe through the park. There’s something for everyone.

LAKE BLED, SLOVENIA
Located in a Northwestern corner of Slovenia, Lake Bled is a short bus ride from the capital city of Ljubljana. The mountainous grey landscape is broken in the middle by bursts of colour from the crimson hues of fall. The imposing Bled castle is perched atop a hill and makes for a very dramatic sight in the middle of the lake.

LOIRE VALLEY, FRANCE
The rolling vineyards of France’s Loire Valley is a great place to view the changing colours of autumn where the greens turn to yellows and browns. It also coincides with the harvest — you can see the grapes being picked, maybe even sample some of the local wine and cuisine while you’re at it.

HOKKAIDO, JAPAN
Japan’s northernmost prefecture draws a large number of visitors from all over the world because of the renowned beauty of its fall foliage. Indulge in a bit of outdoor activities like hiking, canoeing and cycling at the Onuma Qasi National Park while enjoying the hues of autumn, or relax in the onsen (hot springs) of the Sounkyo Canyon, among other fall foliage destinations on the island.

SCOTLAND
Scotland offers some of the best autumn hues in all of Europe. Against the backdrop of the imposing Scottish Highlands, the stunning ochres and russets look simply magnificent. Hiking trails abound here too, as do rivers and lakes, for ample opportunities to view the fall foliage.
