'The demotivation, motivated me to dance'

It was a tough competition,” says Rupesh Bane, the winner of Star Plus’ Dance Plus 5. The 20-year-old dancer picked up the trophy on Sunday after competing with Deepika-Rupesh (Team Karishma), Janam (Team Punit) and Sanchita-Subrata (Team Punit).

“I wasn’t really confident because everyone else was so good but I was confident about reaching the finale because I was consistently getting ‘Plus’ from the judges. My mother is very proud and I am happy that I am able to fulfill her dream,”says Rupesh.

He admits that the three other finalists gave him tough competition on the show. “Janam’s style of storytelling was beautiful, Sanchita and Subrata’s tricks were great and Deepika and Rupesh’s storytelling and popping was equally good.”

Rupesh, who was part of Dharmesh (Yelande) sir’s team, says that he had lot of fun with his fellow contestants and his mentor. “I have learnt a lot from him and I have developed a strong bonding with him. He taught us how to perform on stage in spite of all the problems and difficulties we are facing in life. He said, ‘We have to perform confidently and maintain eye contact with the crowd.’ Main Dharmesh sir ka ladla hoon,” says the boy, adding that he learned different dance styles from other contestants.

Hosted by Raghav Juyal, the show was judged by Remo D’souza (Super judge) and four captains — Dharmesh, Punit Pathak, Suresh Mukund and Karishma Chavan. The dance reality show went on air two months back.
Rupesh plans to get into acting now. He says that he wants to work as a choreographer with Remo sir. “But if he offers me a role in one of his film projects, it would be great. I am focusing on acting now,” he says with a smile.

Rupesh has struggled a lot in his life. He lost his father at a young age and his relatives often mocked him for his passion for dancing. “The demotivation, motivated me to dance. There were days when I used to keep practising with the props and after three days, my body would stop responding because it used to be so tired. People used to tell me, ‘If you are unable to dance, just stop it. Dancing is not for weak people’. But after winning the show, the same people are congratulating me,” he says.

After winning the show, Rupesh wants people to remember his name and dancing style. “Usually people forget winners of reality shows after some time. But I want to be connected with the audience. I want to be seen on the screen for my audience,” he says before signing off.
