A delicious dough

The smell of freshly baked cookies is drool worthy. Just in case you are in the mood for some cookies or say, some cookie dough, you can check out Scoopski. Eating raw cookie dough is quite popular in the West and is slowly gaining popularity in India.

“When I was visiting the USA I came across a lot of people who were relishing raw cookie dough and they absolutely loved it. More importantly, it was readily available in stores across cities,” says Vedika Tibrewal, founder of Scoopski, a startup based out of Kolkata.

It was something new for her but what she found interesting was people going gaga over dough. “When we saw people thronging stores just to get their hands on cookie dough, my mom and I had to try it, and guess what, we fell in love with it. We never thought that it would be this tasty, so we had to get it back to India,” says Tibrewal adding that this was how they got the idea to come up with a business module around the same.

Ask her what was the most interesting part of tasting the cookie dough and why she thought of starting something like this and she replies, “When I first tasted it, I loved the fact that it had such an interesting flavour and texture to it, and I had to share it with people back home.”

She points out that the cookie dough is amazing because it can be consumed in a number of ways. “Have it the way it is, use it as spread, in milkshakes or bake it — there are endless uses of this dough,” she says.

Currently they have eight flavours — Nutella Chocochip Cookie, Marshmallow Cookie, Dark Chocolate Cookie, Caramel Sea Salt Cookie, Chocochip Cookie, to name a few, and the products are priced between Rs 300 and 400. Scoopski ships the products across the country.

Talking about the challenges that she faces in the market where the idea of the product is relatively new, Tibrewal says, “Of course there have been times when people who are not aware of the concept ask us funny questions like: ‘How can you eat things that are raw, won’t it be problematic?’ and so on. This is mainly because some of them are not aware of the concept and making them aware becomes a bit challenging — while a few are ready to experiment, a few just won’t go for it easily.”

She says that since there is no consumer education when it comes to new products it becomes extremely difficult to convince people to try it and invest in it, especially when it comes to putting these products on shelves in stores.

Tibrewal points out that ever since she decided to start her business, not just her mother but her entire family has been very supportive, which gives her the confidence to keep moving forward and taking the startup to new heights.

Talking about Scoopski’s plans, Tibrewal says that she wants to introduce a few more Indianised flavours to the collection and hopes it becomes a household staple in the years to come.
The delicious doughs can be ordered through their website (www.scoopski.in) and social media accounts.
