Creating a celebrity

Women’s Connect is all set to launch a coffee table book titled She — the Change, featuring women entrepreneurs. “This is an innovative approach towards women empowerment and a unique concept for female entrepreneurs to introduce their businesses in the most innovative ways to the world,” explains Alpa Parmar, the woman behind this idea and founder of Woman’s Connect.

The initiative is about spreading awareness regarding women’s businesses, and a step towards transforming their social and economic status by empowering them. In the book, 27 inspiring women entrepreneurs across domains are featured — salon to e-commerce and digital fields to manufacturing. Some of them are Nirupama Singh, Nishrin Poonawala, Sunaina Nadkarni, and Dr Darsha Mehta. “These are examples of the wonders that a woman can create with her determination and will power,” says Parmar.

The Women’s Connect initiative celebrates the winning spirit of womanhood. “This is my dream project, it is close to my heart as I believe a woman is the true source of will, determination and persistence. She, is the real change. We want to make people aware of these inspiring stories,” she explains, adding, “We are also promoting ‘Swadeshi Apnao’ —  a way through which Indian entrepreneurs can mark their presence worldwide.”

All forms of art will be displayed, performed and marketed at the book launch event next month, to be hosted by Women’s Connect which was started in April 2017. “From our first event in a housing society to this one in a five-star property, we have come a long way. I am hoping to widen the community,” Parmar says.

Nadkarni, who works in the advertising industry, says that it’s not easy to work in an industry dominated by males. “It is quite a challenge,” she says, to which Poonawala adds that while being a woman entrepreneur is difficult, she is supported by a lot of males — friends and family. “I thus ensure that I acknowledge these men,” says the founder of an online magazine. “In line with Alpa’s thinking, I too believe in encouraging new talent. I thus ensure that we feature upcoming women entrepreneurs instead of simply featuring the celebrities. It’s about creating a celebrity,” Poonawala insists.

The idea of Women’s Connect is to bring together all these women so that they can widen their networks and mutually benefit from each other’s social and professional circles. “Exposure to all is the motive,” says Singh, dietician and nutritionist.
